IRAQ Remains Dismal

IRAQ Remains Dismal

As of this week a total of 2,270
Americans have lost their lives in Iraq
, the great majority of those
losses suffered in combat. The number of wounded has reached 16,653,
just over half of those marked wounded but returned to duty. A little known
cost is in vehicles lost in combat. Just for the U.S. Army alone that number
has reached nearly 1,000. The cost for replacing those totally destroyed vehicles
and overhauling thousands more worn out by heavy use totals $9 billion in this
year's proposed defense budget and in the off-budget emergency wartime supplemental
budget Congress passes twice each fiscal year. JOSEPH

Today, I started wondering where the numbers were this time last
year. See, that's when I'd finally gotten my political show into final draft
form. The number on the page is almost half the number shown above, almost half.
In one year we've exploded the number of killed and wounded. I cringe to think
that the number may double again by this time next year.

Before turning in, I did a quick check around to see who was covering
what. Markos had Iraq up top, with emphasis on the KIA. Amen.

Since it's Sunday, I'd thought I'd close with this…

“We lament with special anguish the
war in Iraq, launched in deception and violating global norms of justice and
human rights,” said the statement from representatives of the 34 U.S.
members of the World Council of Churches. “We mourn all who have died
or been injured in this war. We acknowledge with shame abuses carried out
in our name.”
- CHURCHES
SPEAK OUT
(
The World Council of Churches
includes more than 350 mainstream Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox churches)

Let's have another amen.
