McCain’s Embarrassment Goes Beyond Riches

McCain's Embarrassment Goes Beyond Riches

McCain's straw poll panic: back Terror Guy!

Facing a loss at a 2008 straw poll event this weekend,
Senator John McCain of Arizona told his supporters to write in President Bush
[?] as a sign of support, leaving many sputtering.

“For the next three years, with our country at
war, he's our president and the only one who needs our support,” McCain
told nearly 2,000 party activists from 26 states gathered in Memphis.

McCain, realizing the national political media had
descended on the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, moved to discredit
the straw poll by asking delegates to vote for Bush, insiders claim.

Instead of stopping the momentum of Majority Leader
Bill Frist – widely anticipated to win the straw poll – the move seemed to
expose the McCain camp's insincerity about its position with the base.

One activist said, “McCain voted against all the
Bush tax cuts… maybe he should have voted for the president then, instead
of waiting for a political stunt to try and distract.”

DRUDGE

When you get a headline screaming “MCCAIN IN REPUBLICAN STRAW
POLL EMBARRASSMENT,” it's time to circle the wagons. In that spirit, Senator
McCain is begging people to throw their vote behind Bush. Money
is king
, but even with cash you still have to be able to count the base
as your constituency in order to get where you want to go.

… … okay, so maybe “begging” is the wrong word,
however, it seems that a bit of a panic has set in on the presidential hopeful.

But to suggest Republicans support Bush right now seems beyond
desperate. The president is the
Republicans' biggest problem
.

They tried to show their independence from Bush over the Dubai
port debacle, but we're just not buying it. Neither is The New York Times.

We keep hearing that the Republicans in
Congress are in revolt against the president.

Some rebellion.

(snip)

Take domestic spying, held up as another
area of Republican revolt. The program violates the law. Congress knows it.
The public knows it. Even President Bush knows it. (He just says the law doesn't
apply to him.) In response, the Capitol Hill rebels are boldly refusing to
investigate the program — or any other warrantless spying that is going
on. They are trying to rewrite the law to legalize warrantless spying. And
meanwhile, they've created new subcommittees to help the president go on defying
the law. …

(snip)

After 9/11, Mr. Bush created a network
of prisons outside the American legal system so he could hold people indefinitely
without any hearings. When the Supreme Court said twice that he was reaching
beyond his powers, the Republicans in Congress were determined not to let
this assault on the rule of law continue. So they rose as one, and legalized
the president's actions. In case there was any confusion about its resolve,
Congress told the courts that they could no longer rule on these matters.
Mr. Bush got the message, loud and clear. He sent his lawyers right out to
inform the judges, including the Supreme Court, that they had to drop all
the cases that were already before them.

And all this does not even include the act of open
rebellion by which the Senate is helping the White House cover up the hyping
of intelligence on Iraq.

With rebels like these, who needs loyalists?

About
That Rebellion …

And one of those “rebels” who walk the walk of an actual
Bush loyalist is Senator John McCain. However, what has his loyalty gotten him?
Some face time with reality.

“Frist is bussing people in,”
Lott said, referring to Senate Majority Bill Frist (R-Tennessee), whose political
organization is working to ensure he wins this unscientific early test of
election viability. “These are not real delegates. These are people being
bussed in to produce the results. It is a rigged deal. It doesn't matter.”

Facing an embarrassing loss at the first straw poll for 2008,
John McCain punted to the president. Seems politicians will do anything to save face. Tell us something we didn't know.

UPDATE: See Sunday's post which includes Howdy Frist.
