Get Me Some of What Joe Lieberman is Smoking

Okay, so first Joe Lieberman is part of the team that drags FEMA into the Homeland
Security department, the biggest waste of taxpayer dollars since the Ken Starr
investigation. Now, following Susan Collins who helped him drag FEMA into Homeland
Security in the first place, Lieberman now wants to abolish the agency. And
he wants to do it just about one month before the next hurricane season begins.
Wow, Joe Lieberman really is a Republican. His incompetence reveals him.

Let me also admit that I was for the Homeland Security department. I have never
been more wrong. What a disaster it has been. FEMA folds into Homeland Security
and we get the Katrina disaster response. When FEMA was it's own agency it performed
like a dream. Now, not so much. But you don't dismantle FEMA, which used to
work, especially right before the season begins. If anything, tighten and unload
Homeland Security. While you're at it get rid of Chertoff.

Joe Lieberman's latest is one for the books.

A Senate committee is urging that the Federal Emergency Management Agency
be dismantled and restructured to deal with the problems exposed by its response
to Hurricane Katrina, setting off a political fight in Congress over the agency's
future.

“We have concluded that FEMA is in shambles and beyond repair and that
it should be abolished,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who heads the
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said in a press
conference today. “The first obligation of government is to protect our
people. In Katrina, we failed at all levels of government.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the committee's ranking Democrat, faulted
President Bush as well, for lack of action during the crisis and for not cooperating
with the committee investigation.

“For Hurricane Katrina, the president failed to provide critical leadership
when it was most needed, and that contributed to a grossly ineffective federal
response,” he said.

Collins characterized President Bush's role in the Katrina response disaster
as “by no means perfect,” and the report calls his performance “halting
and inadequate.” Lieberman, filing separate findings about the White
House role, said he thought the president's performance deserved “stronger
criticism.”

Senate Panel Urges FEMA Overhaul

Oh, and if you think that's bad, now that everything has calmed down on the
Dubai ports deal. The Republicans have decided that port security isn't so important.
Republicans are yielding to pressure from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the
Retail Industry Leaders Association, which represents Wal-Mart, Target, Home
Depot and Best Buy to ignore the port security bill put forth by Rep. Markey.
That's right, Republicans
are scuttling port security
, because nothing is more important than supporting
big business, not even your country.

A coalition of industry groups is mounting an aggressive lobbying campaign
to persuade House Homeland Security Committee Republicans to oppose an amendment
that would require all cargo to be scanned at foreign ports before being shipped
to the United States.
The amendment will be introduced by Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass, when the committee
meets Wednesday to mark up a major bipartisan port security bill.

The coalition includes several of the nation's largest business groups, retailers
and importers, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Retail Industry
Leaders Association, which represents outlets like Wal-Mart, Target, Home
Depot and Best Buy.

Republicans
CAVE and defeat cargo inspection amendment

Okay, so I changed the title of the article a little. It's factual.
If I were really being honest I would have said something like what Jesse Lee
wrote: Big
Business Wins, National Security Loses.
Republicans are a bunch
of incompetent corporate suck ups. They continue to sell our national security
to the highest bidder. Remember that when we get hit by a terrorist attack.

As for Joe Lieberman, it's time he just registered as a Republican.
Scuttling FEMA when it worked right up until the moment you were the one who
helped decide to strip it of its independence and stick it inside of Homeland
Security? That's the kind of move an incompetent, bumbling Bush buffoon would
make. Give it up, Joe. You don't have the right stuff to be a Democrat anymore.
