Republican Assault on the American Family

In churches, shops and sidewalks across the Washington
region yesterday, thousands of people bustled in preparation for a rally that
immigration advocates say could be a pivotal moment for Latinos and other
groups seeking to demonstrate their political clout.Organizers of the National Day of Action for Immigrant
Justice — or La Marcha , as some volunteers are calling it — said it could
draw as many as 180,000 people to the Mall and hundreds of thousands more
in nearly 100 cities nationwide. … …… … Across California alone, about 20 events are
planned for today, ranging from a rally in Bakersfield to a ceremony in San
Diego dedicated to immigrants who have died trying to cross the border illegally. The demonstrations, which are being coordinated by an umbrella organization
known as the National Capital Immigration Coalition, began yesterday in more
than 20 cities, including Dallas, where police estimated that 300,000 to 350,000
people gathered. In Dallas, many waved U.S. flags and wore white clothing to symbolize peace,
the Associated Press reported. There were no reports of violence. The events will continue today in cities small and large, including Phoenix,
New York, Seattle and Chicago. The rally on the Mall was expected to be among
the largest, although with an estimated Hispanic population of 576,000 in
2004, the Washington region isn't among the 10 U.S. metropolitan areas with
the most Hispanics.

The wingnuts are in full fear spin.
What are Republicans afraid of? To read Michelle Malkin and other
Republicans, you'd think they actually believe the threat of the “reconquistadors.”
The wingnut brigade actually believes that Mexican immigrants are going to rise
up, arm themselves and take back California and other western states. It's the
latest hobgoblin of hyperbole.
Illegal immigrants want to keep their families together. Period.
They want a chance to work and prosper in the United States, which benefits
us all.
Where is the Republican “family values” coalition today?
Or is “family values” only for white Christians or others who potentially
will vote Republican? That's the issue, baby, because Republicans don't see
immigrants as being in their best interest. Callous but true. To them, the American family is not multi-cultured and multi-ethinic, it's northern European or bust, only heterosexuals need apply. They'd better get a grip.
Republicans are the ones inspiring such questions that open out on very harsh conclusions. The Sensenbrenner
bill shows the weakness of leadership inside the Republican Party. They're so
frightened of diversity they can't find a solution. All they offer is more division.
Senator Reid and the Democrats were right to fight against Republicans
pushing through a “compromise” immigration bill, because what Republicans
are proposing is anti-family and anti-middle class. It shows their abject inability
to actually lead and solve problems, especially on the issues of diversity.
If it isn't a tax cut they're clueless.
Families are marching together and in honor of one another today
because it is immoral to break up families based on fear and they're angry about
it.
Amnesty is not the answer and it has not been proposed by the
Kennedy-McCain legislation. But criminalizing immigrants or dividing them into
groups according to a time line is not a good option either. Then there is the
issue of employers being sanctioned for aiding and abetting the situation. That's
got to be part of the solution.
Look at the people marching, of all ages. They're families. They're
the middle class and people poorer. They matter and an immigration policy needs
to honor their humanity, not use some bogus boogeyman like “reconquistadors”
to scare Americans further into believing the immigrant at the door is a terrorist.
A path to citizenship will not be easy for any illegal immigrant,
but no one should have their family broken apart while trying to work for a
better life in the greatest country in the world.
However, let's get to the bottom line. Republicans are afraid
because the party is so weak on diversity that their only hope is to stir up
their wingnut base, with the all important send 'em home bone thrown
to right-wing radio. Because they're afraid that if illegal immigrants are made
legal they'll be a whole new block for Democrats. So people like Michelle
Malkin and others are whipping up an anti-immigrant sentiment to let Republicans
know what they face if illegal immigration is solved through eventual citizenship.
Republicans are simply scared of the reality they see, but instead of solving
the challenge, they are cementing a very ugly image across the globe.
