The Politics of Gas Prices

Bush speaks and Senator Frist strikes again. Every time he steps up to the microphone to offer
a plan we get treated to his incompetent Senate stewardship. He actually believes
giving us $100 will make us forget what the Republicans did last year. The oil
companies get whopping subsidies, while we get screwed, but the Republicans
have hatched a plan. Buy us off with a hundred bucks. These people are priceless.
At this rate, under Republican “leadership,” gas prices likely will
be too.

Then there’s Charles Krauthammer, who thinks in very simple terms. It’s all
about “supply and demand.” He also obviously thinks we’re stupid.

One of my long-time sets him straight:

I love the response by the government to rising gasoline prices: waivers
for environmental laws.

Most people blame the high gasoline prices on the cost of crude oil. On The
Daily Show last night, Jon asked that woman from the WSJ about the oil company
profits and she walked all around it and never said the real reason: Because
the refining capacity in this country is not sufficient. THAT is what allows
the price to fluctuate so much. THAT is where the national security aspect
is. And since the oil companies make a FORTUNE when prices spike, they have
NO incentive to build more capacity. A REAL energy policy would have required
more refining capacity as part of the tax incentive deal. JoeBeets

So, refineries, here we come.

Anglo-Dutch oil group Royal Dutch Shell has announced plans to make its jointly
owned Motiva refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, the biggest in the United States.

Shell founded the Motiva refiniery in 1998 with Saudi Refining and is considering
increasing the output at the facility by 325,000 barrels per day.

“The project would make the Port Arthur Refinery the largest in the
country,” Shell said in a statement on Friday.

With May just hitting, the ranting and raving and political posturing has only
just begun. As for solutions? Don’t count on it from Republicans.
