#2 Democrat Attacks Stephen Colbert

More Mort Sahl types, less of George W. Bush weakness.

Via

comes a very disturbing development. The number 2 Democrat in
the House is attacking Stephen Colbert. This guy isn't on our side.

“Reality has a well-known liberal bias,” said Colbert
on Saturday night
. That must be the reason Steny Hoyer didn't appreciate
the heroism in Cobert's performance. Because if Hoyer is going to defend President
Bush, saying he deserves some respect, he's obviously lost all credibility in
the reality department. Criticizing Colbert by saying he “crossed the line”
and offered jokes that were “in bad taste” is just not something that
rings true to 60% of Americans.

After all Bush's failures, from inviting oil companies and other energy giants
in to help make policy to the bumbling incompetence of Iraq, not to mention that the instability caused by Bush continues to cause oil prices to spike, President Bush
has not taken responsibility for anything. But the real issue is that his weakness
and failings have cost our troops and the American public a lot. He needs to
be held accountable for this.

Artists have a duty to never shirk from speaking the truth to people in power. They pay a price for that bravery, but the American public is better for their unmitigated gall to call presidents and lesser people to task for what they do. Let the booker beware.

Did Colbert get “a little rough” on Saturday night? Frankly, they
got the man they hired. Colbert is a slashing satirist. The real problem was
the room was seduced by Bush making fun of himself, trying to endear himself
to the crowd, and they forgot for a moment what the man has wrought. So it's Steny to the rescue. How embarrassing for him.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took on a rare role yesterday as
a defender of President Bush.

Hoyer came to the defense of the commander in chief after Saturday’s
White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where the president
took a drubbing from comedian Stephen Colbert.

“I thought some of it was funny, but I think it got a little rough,”
Hoyer said. “He is the president of the United States, and he deserves
some respect.”

“I’m certainly not a defender of the administration,” Hoyer
reassured stunned observers, but Colbert “crossed the line” with
many jokes that were “in bad taste.”

Colbert needled Bush, often prompting only an expressionless stare from the
president, who appeared not to be amused.

Hoyer:
Bush deserves respect

We finally get someone standing up for Americans against President Bush, who
had the cojones to call him out and the number 2 Democrat criticizes him?

Feeling sorry for President Bush because you think Colbert was “a little
rough” ignores what the man has done and how he has ducked responsibility
at every turn. Colbert had him as a captive audience and didn't let down until
the job was done. Perhaps Hoyer should be given a lesson in artistry, perhaps pick
up Neil Young's new album. As a fellow performer, having done Broadway and many
other venues, recently written a political play and performed it to small houses
of both Dems and Republicans, I will tell you that the nature of genius is never
shrinking in the face of the target of your creativity. Mort Sahl and then Lenny
Bruce after him both drew blood when they performed. I should be so lucky as
to rise to such levels. But that is the nature, the nut, the nucleus of what
Stephen Colbert does. We have too few today.

In fact, if the Democratic Party had more Colberts and less Steny Hoyers to offer to the American people we
might actually take back the Senate and the House this year.
