| Middle class Americans don't pay taxes? |
Before we get to General Hayden's CIA chief confirmation (free video feed here), we first have to
deal with yet another insult by the Republicans, because Dennis Hastert has
just made some news.
Proving my point yesterday that Republicans just don't
get it, Speaker Hastert gave a nice little speech that a family of 4 earning
$40,000 doesn't pay any taxes. Oh, really? Why don't Republicans understand the FICA taxes are taxes? What about property
taxes, sales tax, as well as state and local taxes? Speaker Hastert is obviously
so out of touch that he does not understand what middle class Americans deal
with every day. That's likely why Republicans allowed a college tuition tax
credit to expire, saying it would be brought up next time around. It wasn't
important enough to deal with now.
Oh, but about corporations and stock owners and others, they got their tax
cut and how. In fact, their tax cut was fast tracked, meaning it could not be
stopped.
The college tuition tax credit, which we're to believe will come up later,
will not have the fast track path. It will be part of a tax package that needs
a super majority of 60 votes. In other words, Republicans have put the middle
class second in their priority list, as usual, with fat cats up front and center.
Oh, and just so we're clear. If you had a college tuition credit tax cut yesterday, but it expires today because the Republicans didn't bother to extend it, that means you actually get a tax HIKE. The Republicans just raised your taxes, middle America. That's the bottom line.
So from injury to insult, I give you Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, in his own words.
… first of all, i've heard some arguments on the other side of the aisle
saying, well, if you had — if you earn $40,000 a year, you wouldn't get a very
big tax cut. well, folks, if you earn $40,000 a year and have a family of two,
you don't pay any taxes. so you probably — if you don't pay any taxes, you
are not going to get a big tax cut. now, if you earn $1 million a year, you
are going to pay about $400,000 of taxes. maybe you'll get a $40,000 tax cut,
maybe. … Speaker
Dennis Hastert
