The West Wing

If you're not a fan this post won't matter. If you are then you'll know and it will. To think it began with a napkin. “Bartlet for America.” If you've ever had the pleasure and pain of a campaign you'll get it. If you haven't, it's likely why you watched.

I am of the generation of television. It was my babysitter. I
have always marveled at its democratization, up until cable took over and ushered
us all into a world of non-stop shows and no commercials, with choices at our
fingertips. But it's fitting that Josiah “Jeb” Barlet entered on basic.

But “The West Wing” was special. Some of us feel sentimental about it. It wasn't just that Jeb was a Democratic
president, believe me. When Arnie Vinnick was chosen as Secrectary of State I applauded. It was about higher ideals, dilemmas and drama, which always, in
it's meaning, opened out onto people doing good for this great nation, so other people would prosper from their acts and share the wealth with others. Democracy is supposed to be contagious, preferably without the bombs.

But all good things come to an end. The finale was fitting, even large. I'm glad I've
got the DVDs. That way, whenever I need a break or a brief respite, I can remember the crux. Making
a difference every day.
