Hoekstra's Hypocritical Hissy Fit
![]() |
It looks like the rubber stamp Republicans are beginning to wake up, one eye
at a time.
Over the weekend, the New
York Times printed a letter Rep. Pete Hoekstra sent President Bush. If it
were read out loud on Saturday Night Live it would get one heck of a laugh.
It seems Petie is just now figuring out that George W. Bush doesn't give his
presidential pie hole about Congressional oversight. Hello.
Via TPM Muckraker,
here's the political nucleus of the missive:
Finally, Mr. President, but perhaps most importantly, I want to reemphasize
that the Administration has the legal responsibility to “fully and currently”
inform the House and Senate Intelligence Committees of its intelligence and
intelligence-related activities. Although the law gives you and the committees
flexibility on how we accomplish that (I have been fully supportive of your
concerns in this respect), it is clear that we, the Congress, are to be provided
all information about such activities. I have learned of some alleged Intelligence
Community activities about which our committee has not been briefed. In the
next few days I will be formally requesting information on these activities.
If these allegations are true, they may represent a breach of responsibility
by the Administration, a violation of law, and, just as importantly, a direct
affront to me and the Members of this committee who have so ardently supported
efforts to collect information on our enemies. … The U.S. Congress
should not have to play “Twenty Questions” to get the information
it deserves under our Constitution.Sincerely yours,
If I didn't know better, I'd say Petie is trying to channel Russ Feingold on
that last line. But at least he gave Bush a warning, because you can't have a full on hissy fit, after all, now can we?
Everyone was wondering who was Hoekstra's source?
TPM Muckraker
has that too. His name is Dave Gaubatz: Gaubatz, a former Air Force special
investigator who worked as a civilian employee in Iraq, has volunteered that
he's the “whistleblower.”
Oh, and you'll love this one. Gaubatz said he “was really stunned they
weren't aware,” Congress that is. After all, it wasn't his job to tell
them. No wonder Hoekstra is having a hissy, however calculated. Someone is keeping secrets and it's
leading back to the boss of bosses. Nom not W., Dick.
