Goodbye F-14 Tomcat – Hello F/A-18 Super Hornet

Goodbye F-14 Tomcat – Hello F/A-18 Super Hornet –updated–

“The Tomcat is one of the world's true Top Guns,” said the museum's director, Mike Boehme, in a news release. – F-14 Tomcat landing here — permanently

Everyone remembers Tom Cruise in “Top Gun”. The F-14 Tomcat made its first flight in 1970.

Well, the Navy retired the F-14 this week. It's been a great war plane for the U.S., even getting our pilots through the horrible sand storm during the Iraq war, as CNN again covered today. Many will miss her. The F/A-18 Super Hornet, seen below, will replace the famous aircraft.

UPDATE (11:16 a.m.): If you're near a TV, Kyra Phillips of CNN is taking a final flight in the F-14. She was embedded with an F-14 squadron in 2003. It's a cool segment, especially for us gals. She'll be up in the air for about an hour. They're going to film the flight and show the film later.
