HAROLD FORD Pulls Even in Senate Race

HAROLD FORD, Jr. Pulls Even in Senate Race

Harold Ford, Jr. is running one hell of a race, which was proven in the latest Rasmussen
poll. He's just one
point down as of today
. There is not an appropriate adjective to describe
the monumental meaning of this development.

Ford winning this seat was considered impossible when it started.

This particular race has intrigued me from the beginning because I think Ford
is as good a politician as I've seen in a long time. He and I disagree on many
things, including the timetable I believe necessary for Iraq. However, running
in the south for Democrats has not been easy for decades. Ford's nuanced —
yes, nuanced — campaign shows how someone with spine, conviction and
in your face rhetoric can run well and not only challenge Republicans but actually
win.

Stoller's doing a very interesting “ad accountability” campaign over
at MyDD, with one of the ads he analyzed being Harold Ford's. Matt's right,
it's slick, though I disagree with Matt on the strategic angle. That said, you can't argue that Ford is a progressive because he isn't. My take, one step at a time.

Everyone has a favorite race in 2006. Mine is this one. I know Ford's mentor
is supposedly Joe Lieberman, but I won't hold that against him. Ford is running in Tennessee
where, if he wins, his campaign could become the model for how Democrats win
in conservative districts all across the south. Once we get conservative Democrats back in power down south we can work on getting progressives to replace them eventually. Tennessee isn't Connecticut.

That's the bottom line for me: winning. Ford chastises Bush, which Lieberman
didn't do until Ned Lamont beat him up in the primaries. Ford also has real
heart.

One point down? Harold Ford, Jr. just might pull off a political miracle in Tennessee.
