Rape Holiday Declared in Pakistan –updated–
Hey guys in Pakistan, what are you doing today? Why don't you get 2 or 3 —
just not 4 — of your buddies together, find a woman and gang rape her. Tuesdays
are not busy days, so what the hell, right? That's what Pakistan just declared
as law.
Four men need to be witnesses to a woman's rape in Pakistan, or she will be
charged with adultery.
The only woman I've witnessed who had four witnesses of being rape was Jodie
Foster in a movie, or a porn star, who actually signed up for the gig. With
allies on the “war on terror” like Musharaff we really don't need
any more enemies.
In a setback for women's rights in Pakistan, the ruling party in Islamabad
has caved in to religious conservatives by dropping its plans to reform rape
laws.Statutes known as the Hudood ordinances, based on sharia law, currently operate
in Pakistan. They require a female rape victim to produce four male witnesses
to corroborate her account, or she risks facing a new charge of adultery. The ruling party in Islamabad, made up of a coalition of groups allied to
President Pervez Musharraf, had hoped the new Protection of Women Bill would
place the crime of rape within the country's secular penal code, which works
in tandem with sharia. But the government said rape would remain a crime punished by Islamic law
yesterday after conservatives in an opposition group, Muttahida Majlis-I-Amal
(MMA), threatened to walk out of parliament in protest if the government pushed
ahead with reforms. …
Setback? This is just a “setback.” Good God, if this is a setback then our moral compass is non-existent.
I wonder if Laura Bush will have anything to say about this story. Likely she'll
keep on spewing that women have new rights thanks to her husband's freedom march
across the world. As for George, all we'll get from him is that Pres. Musharaff
is an ally on the “war on terror,” as Terror Guy continues to politicize 9/11 and everything else having to do with jihadists.
Madrassas are more popular today, especially in Pakistan, than ever. One of
the reasons is that Musharaff is seen as a puppet of the United States. But since he's making truces with our enemies that line is strictly propaganda for the extremists; like they need any in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, according to CNN, Bush has put together a deal with the Saudis,
who are footing the bill for a student exchange program. As many as 15,000 Saudis
will enroll in colleges in the U.S. as part of the program. Excuse me, but didn't
we learn anything yet? We continue to educate and then export Saudis and others
back to their native country where they then turn into bomb makers and jihadists.
I know I sound extreme, but I'd rather the Saudis spend this money on schools
inside Saudi Arabia aimed at curtailing the teachings of the madrassas, which
preach all manner of hatred to the west. Ah yes, but they won't do that, now will they? Why? Because the Saudi royals are afraid their people will rise up and take them down, which wouldn't be very good for our interests either. So it's same old same old with U.S. policy regarding the Saudis. Swell.
As for women in these countries, Bush's freedom agenda has left them out.
UPDATE (11:45 a.m.): Speaking of women, we've gotten passed Pakistan, but the women in our military are still fighting all sorts of harassment. Susan Swift, however, just won a victory. Congressman Peter DeFazio has agreed to investigate her case.
