The \’Frozen Chosen\’ Stand Up for Equality
One thing I appreciate and respect about the Episcopal Church is that
they fight out in the open. They\’re not a religion full of secret rites and
rituals and sacred details that cannot be talked about in the light of day.
The same cannot be said for other churches, particularly Mormons, where everything
is secret and if you dare to discuss the intricacies and the fine print honestly
and openly you are often castigated, sometimes even censored, or called a \”bigot\”
by the likes of Sean Hannity and Dick Morris (of all people, as he and Hannity push Mitt Romney for \’08), simply because you want
to ask real questions about a faith you do not understand.
My church of choice is in Los Angeles, so, as I\’ve stated many times before, most of my spirituality today revolves
around daily rituals of meditation, but I remain a proud Episcopalian, especially
when I read stories like this one.
Responding to an ultimatum from the leaders of the worldwide Anglican Communion,
bishops of the Episcopal Church have rejected a key demand to create a parallel
leadership structure to serve the conservative minority of Episcopalians who
oppose their church’s liberal stand on homosexuality. The bishops, meeting at a retreat center outside of Houston, said they were
aware that their decision could lead to the exclusion of the Episcopal Church
from the Anglican Communion, an international confederation of churches tied
to the Church of England. The bishops have a “deep longing” to remain part of the Communion,
they said, but they are unwilling to compromise the Episcopal Church’s
autonomy and its commitment to full equality for all people, including gay
men and lesbians. … ..(snip)
Reached by telephone as he was leaving the bishops meeting, Bishop Robert
Duncan of Pittsburgh, who leads a network of conservatives who have been asking
for alternative oversight, would only say: “I’m really thinking
through what all this means.”
Thinking through what all this means, indeed.
Conservative \”Christians\” who exclude gays and lesbians from the
American family really make you question the whole tenet of \”Christianity\”
as they live it. They should be ashamed.
