The Lame Duck is Dead
Whatever hope George W. Bush had of staying relevant is now gone. Kaput. Finito.
Not even a miracle in Mesopotamia can save his sorry presidency. It took ordinary
Americans in a jury room to finish the job. Everything will move on without
him. As you can already tell, the \’08 contest has heated up in the hopes we
can all forget him. Now it\’s just a matter of clocking time. However, for Republicans
the reality is far gloomier.
You\’ve got Ann Coulter disgracing the biggest conservative gathering of the
year, with Sean Hannity offering her cover. Mind you, this is the woman that
Alan Colmes calls "clever." So goes Fox "News."
You\’ve got Republicans embroiled in disgraceful
U.S. attorney firings.
And now you\’ve got conservatives invoking the "i" word, something
I haven\’t done around here ever.
"The president says, \’I don\’t care.\’ He\’s not accountable anymore,"
Hagel says, measuring his words by the syllable and his syllables almost by
the letter. "He\’s not accountable anymore, which isn\’t totally
true. You can impeach him, and before this is over, you might see calls for
his impeachment. I don\’t know. It depends how this goes."The conversation beaches itself for a moment on that word — impeachment
— spoken by a conservative Republican from a safe Senate seat in a reddish
state. It\’s barely even whispered among the serious set in Washington, and
it rings like a gong in the middle of the sentence, even though it flowed
quite naturally out of the conversation he was having about how everybody
had abandoned their responsibility to the country, and now there was a war
going bad because of it."Congress abdicated its oversight responsibility," he says. "The
press abdicated its responsibility, and the American people abdicated their
responsibilities. Terror was on the minds of everyone, and nobody questioned
anything, quite frankly." … ..Chuck Hagel\’s historic
moment, and what it means for a declining presidency.
This is truly remarkable. Hagel\’s straight talk sets him apart from almost
every other conservative. It also means that the lame duck president of Mr.
Bush is officially dead.
