Republican Crawl to Reality

After Senator Lugar’s speech on the Senate floor a couple of nights ago, it’s
been the light has dawned for all of Dubya’s men. Excuse me, but how
long does it take for supposed “leaders” to figure out that Iraq isn’t
going to end well? Personally, I just love the headline on the story.

Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), a member of the Armed Services Committee, praised
Lugar’s statement as “an important and sincere contribution” to
the Iraq debate.

Republican skepticism has grown steadily, if subtly, since the Senate began
debating the war in February. .. …

GOP
Skepticism On Iraq Growing

Key Senators Urge Reduction in Troops

Comforting is it? After all this time the GOP is finally and at long last coming
to the conclusion that our troops are in real trouble in Iraq. Send the news to their 2008 candidates because they’re evidently intending to go down with Bush’s ship. But I wonder if these
same Republican senators will ever get around to figuring out what they’ve done
to the U.S. military force structure? That their skepticism is growing going on five years is not terribly impressive.

But what are the Republicans going to do about Iraq? Force Bush’s hand or wring
their own? Two guesses.

Reid yesterday hailed Lugar’s speech as a “potential turning point”
in the debate, adding that he looks forward to Lugar putting “his words
into action by delivering the responsible end to the war that the American
people demand.”

Lugar made clear in his speech that he will oppose efforts to tie Bush’s
hands in the upcoming legislation. Instead, he called on the White House to
take the lead in changing strategy before the polarized Washington debate
“increases the risk that our involvement in Iraq will end in a poorly
planned withdrawal that undercuts our vital interests in the Middle East.”

Calling Lugar’s speech a “potential turning point” shows you just how desperate Reid and the Democrats are to bring Republicans over; all olive branches of encouragement extended. We’ve had so many “potential” points in which to change the
Iraq war course, including some that landed on Reid’s own desk, that it’s noteworthy
that Lugar also says he’s not going to actually do anything, but instead simply
talk about doing something.

Congress continues to be all talk on Iraq, then bailing when the vote gets
tough, if only for the purpose of standing their ground and lose the round, then to rise and fight another. Bush
is the one with the action. Reid intends to push the point next month, forcing the Republicans into a corner. I hope it’s a tight one or they’ll find a way to wriggle out.
