“We are appealing to the mainstream.” – Markos Moulitsas
It’s not about liberal or conservatism in the Democratic Party. But if you want to argue who has the heart of the Democratic Party, it is the views we in the blogosphere are promoting. We are representative of what more Americans want today, especially if you want to talk about the Iraq war and how to manifest redeployment, but also health care, as well as turning our foreign policy once again towards muscular diplomacy instead of preemptive war.
Mr. Ford seems to want to place himself and other Democrats in the center for the sake
of grabbing the center. Positioning is only one tiny part of politics.
Mr. Moulitsas wants candidates, no matter where they run, to speak authentically
for him or herself, as well as the people in the district they want to represent. It’s the only way to run and win through a 50-state strategy. Yes, we’ll get Blue Dog Dems sometimes, but without them we’d be stuck with Republicans.
Calculation vs. authenticism. The differences matter. “Blurring the distinctions,” as Markos stated, doesn’t work. Taking strong stands will, especially if Democrats embrace the heart of what it means to be a Democrat, which I talk about every day on this site and on my radio show. It’s how we won in 2006, which will serve us well in ’08 if we don’t lose our sense of purpose and sell out to positioning.
