During the breakout sessions, I got to see some of Edwards, as well as other
candidates, though it was very difficult because they were so far apart. I mentioned
yesterday about Edwards finally getting his message down. Sirota
has posted the YouTube of the moment in the breakout where Edwards laid it down.
After quite a bit of floundering on focus on what the wider message
of his campaign is, Edwards has got it.
Change.
Every candidate needs to explain why he or she wants to be our nominee, but
also why he/she wants to be president.
Edwards has finally grabbed a hold of his message, not just on poverty, because
you simply cannot run on "poverty." No one will vote for you. Poverty
makes people feel bad and voters only come out when you grab their emotions
and inspire them to move on something they can get their hands around and jump
on. Poverty is simply too overwhelming. It needs to be attached to a larger
idea. Poverty is real. What do you want to do about it? Change the
reality.
Lots of things post Bush will need changing. Edwards is making the argument
that he’s the guy who can make those changes. Now he’s got to drive this home
to change the numbers. He’s the only white guy in the top three. He sure doesn’t
look like change, so he’s got to be change through his rhetoric and
ideas.
Edwards has got a game now.
