It’s not what team Edwards was hoping for.
The union said Monday it won’t pick a national candidate for the primary
elections, underscoring divisions that had been apparent among SEIU supporters
of Hillary Rodham Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama."Any one of these candidates would help create a new American dream
for workers and their families," SEIU Secretary Treasurer Anna Burger
said. The international union will not make an endorsement for the primaries, instead
allowing its locals make decisions state by state, officials said.
According to Abinder,
October 15th is the date locals can pick their candidate.
A couple of things. SEIU doesn’t want to back a loser. Clinton looks strong
and is way ahead in many states, but there is great affection in the ranks for
John Edwards. Staying neutral keeps the SEIU national above what’s playing out
on the ground, while allowing their locals to go their own way.
