It’s Christmas and with all the blather about Iraq not being an issue in the 2008 election, I have to say that it should be, a big one. I’ll also admit that it’s not being talked about much right now, mainly because it’s primary season and there isn’t one Democrat who doesn’t want to end the war. But we shouldn’t think the silence will last, nor should it. At some point our nominee must make national security a central focus, because there’s such a wide gulf between Democrats and Republicans on America’s role in the world, which is an important debate to have, especially since Democrats will win it. We want a drastic change of course, especially on diplomatic efforts, while Republicans are still on a rampage to add more people to their “axis of evil” enemies list. The other issue I’ve talked about every week on my radio show, on Tuesdays with experts in foreign policy coming from Rand Beers’ NSN, is that Democrats see foreign policy as a whole concept, not just a ala carte catastrophe opportunity.
I’ll let Ilan Goldenberg, one of my friends over at Democracy Arsenal (he’s been on my show), button it down:
If the economy keeps going the way it is, then it might be more important than Iraq by November 2008. But contrary to our desperate attempts to explain elections as being about one thing, they never are. Elections are about many things and to think that somehow Iraq won’t play an important role is absurd. It still polls as most important or second most important everywhere I’ve seen, and Dems have such an advantage on Iraq that it would be folly not to make it a central part of the campaign.
Our troops are counting on the Democrats to lead. So this Christmas season, everyone should be reminded that Iraq matters. It matters a lot, especially to the soldiers’ families. Read the latest news on the foreign fighters in Iraq if you doubt we’re still in very hot water over there.
Check out the Iraq News Ladder, which was put together by a good buddy of mine. It’s terrific. And then check out Our Troops Ladder. Both are very important to support.
Sending blessings out to our troops across the world. Merry Christmas to you all.
Enjoy your holiday Friday and chat away about all things political or whatever you’re reading or hearing.
