Iraq, Bin Laden, Bush and Obama

Iraq, Bin Laden, Bush and Obama

NBC: Obama wins Maine.

This
happened
as Secretary Gates makes his way back to Iraq to assess the “security
situation” is how the article puts it. It’s his first visit of the year.

A series of bombings targeting Iraqi security forces and American-backed
Sunni guards killed as many as 37 people across northern Iraq on Sunday, according
to Iraqi officials.

On another front, Reuters
has an interesting story up about Bin Laden
(h/t Juan Cole).

Pakistan rejected on Saturday a U.S. official’s assertion that al Qaeda leader
Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar are operating from Pakistani
territory.

A senior U.S. administration official told reporters in Washington Bin Laden,
his deputy Ayman al-Zawahri and others were operating out of Pakistan’s Federally
Administered Tribal Areas bordering Afghanistan.

Mullah Omar and other Taliban leaders were directing insurgency operations
in Afghanistan from the Pakistani city of Quetta, said the U.S. official who
declined to be identified.

Obama’s also getting shots from Bush, which is always good for someone wanting
to look presidential.

“I certainly don’t know what he believes in. The only foreign policy
thing I remember he said was he’s going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad.”
George
W. Bush
