Jeremiah Wright – The Softball Interview
Guest post by Scan
Well, look who’s back in the headlines.
In case you missed it, the Bill Moyers interview with Jeremiah Wright aired last night on PBS. Anyone expecting fireworks was probably disappointed, however. It was very much a softball interview, with a large portion of the first half covering his biography and philosophy before turning to the recent controversies.
Here is one interesting exchange regarding Obama’s speech on race last month:
Several moments of the “God Damn America” and post-9/11 sermons were played on the broadcast. They contained inflammatory words that have outraged a great many people and continue to effect this race. Following the clips, Moyers asked Wright this hard-hitting, blistering question: “Did you somehow fail to communicate?”
That’s the kind of interview it was.
Question: If you had been sitting at that table with Wright, what would you have asked? One I certainly would have asked would have been “Why should anyone even take you seriously after witnessing “ridin’ dirty” from the Sunday pulpit?”. Just one of many I might think of.
I have a ton of respect for Bill Moyers, and consider him to be the anti-O’Reilly. His work exposing the Bush administration has been stellar. But this was simply a huge missed opportunity. Unfortunately, the Republicans have not been, and will not be, as understanding as he was.
