The Thorn Returns

BY TAYLOR MARSH

Joe Lieberman landed in my inbox this morning. I felt like I needed to shower.
He’s helping “grow citizens for McCain.”

As you know, I caucus with the Democrats as a United States Senator and was the Democrat Party’s nominee for Vice-President of the United States against President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

This is the same thing I heard from Senator McCain in the blogger call yesterday. “Democrat Party,” all the while he’s talking about people being sick of the old kind of politics, while using that very type of politics. No one is shocked.

For Bush’s favorite Democrat Joe Lieberman, it’s all about “bipartisanship,” touched off by a political slur. He’s also taking on the Democratic Party nominee in the process.
Now as the article says below, there’s no chance in hell Democrats will do anything
about it at this point. One thing Lieberman is hoping for, however, is that
Democrats don’t prevail in November. Somehow I think his Senate status would
shift if it did. It’s long overdue.

… .. Lieberman participated in a media conference call organized by House
Chief Deputy Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to criticize Obama’s
Middle East policy. Lieberman is a staunch supporter of Israel, and Republicans
aim to make inroads into traditionally Democratic Jewish voters by suggesting
that their presumptive nominee, Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), is a stronger Israel
supporter.

Lieberman’s criticism came in response to Obama’s speech before
the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, where he pledged support to
the Jewish state. It was his first major address after claiming his party’s
nomination late Tuesday night. Lieberman harshly criticized Obama’s
speech and his broader foreign policy stance, particularly on Iran and his
opposition to legislation listing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist
group. Lieberman and Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) sponsored that
bill. … ..

… .. But the incident appeared to have an effect on Obama. During a Senate
vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the
Senate chamber and engaged in an intense three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, Obama literally backed
up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in close and appeared to be trying to
dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth
congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the
exchange.

I’ll talk a bit about Obama’s AIPAC speech in another post. As with all Middle East politics it’s a contest on who
can be more pro Israel
, whether this actually helps Israel or not, never mind what it does to American credibility.

But as far as Lieberman is concerned, when it comes to Middle East foreign
policy, or any matters military, he’s not the guy I want whispering in the president’s ear.
