Why I’m No ‘PUMA’

Guest post by atdleft

Over the weekend, I got angry. In fact, I got so angry I posted this at my place. Fortunately now, I’ve cooled off since then.

But still, I feel so frustrated whenever I think of “PUMA”. After all, some of the “leaders” of this “group” used to be my friends. We were all angry about the primary, angry about the poor treatment Hillary Clinton received from the corporate media & the big blog elite, angry about the free passes Barack Obama seemed to get on everything. Our anger fueled a passion in us to work even harder for Hillary & prove the naysayers calling her a “sore loser” wrong. But as soon as primary season ended, everything changed.

When I saw Hillary Clinton endorse Barack Obama, I knew what I had to do next. I knew Hillary did this not because of political expediency, but of love of country. That’s why I decided that if she could make the jump to support Obama, I could as well. It was time for me to let go of my primary anger and do what had to be done in order to elect a Democratic President this fall and save our republic next January.

In the nearly two months since the primary season ended, I’ve never once thought I made the wrong decision. While Barack Obama isn’t perfect (no one is, not even Hillary), he’s a good Democrat who will make a great President. And while the corporate media loves to portray John McCain as some holy, “moderate” “maverick”, the ugly truth is that he really isn’t. And while we can all try to go back and wonder what would be different now if Hillary Clinton were the Democratic nominee instead of Barack Obama, it’s really not worth it. We really can’t go back, we can only move forward.

This brings me back to my frustration with the “PUMA” faux-movement. They’re all about looking back now. And while I was once angry along with them, I’ve come to realize now that we can not allow our anger from the primaries ruin our one chance this year of reversing this eight-year Bush-Cheney tragedy that we can finally put to an end. While there are many steps we can take in the future to fix the broken nominating system, we can not use our anger from
the primaries as any excuse to allow John “McBush” McCain to continue the Bush-Cheney tragedy for another four years.

Think about it. Do we want the occupation of Iraq to continue indefinitely? Do we want the climate crisis to worsen into a global catastrophe? Do we want more of the same GOP economic royalism that’s caused the current slowdown? Do we want a worsening of the current health care calamity that’s killing our people? And really, do we want even more of an erosion of our Constitution and our civil rights? If we join with “PUMA”, we’re helping John McCain accomplish all of this and worse.

Do you now see why “PUMA” frustrates the heck out of me? It goes against everything Hillary has worked so hard for her whole entire Iife. That’s why she is wholeheartedly supporting Barack Obama for President. That’s why I’ve joined her in doing this. And that’s why the vast majority of her supporters, whether they be my co-bloggers or Taylor Marsh or my own family members, are doing this. We care about our country too much to do otherwise.
