McCain Makes His Choice

by Scott Hopkins
Reporting from Denver

The twins have a moment

The choice has been made, and the McCain campaign was nice enough to let us all know right around the time that Bill Clinton was speaking in support of Barack Obama.

Sen. McCain has chosen his running mate and the person will be notified on Thursday, a senior campaign official said.

A friend said McCain had pretty much settled on his selection early this week, and it crystallized in the past few days. Campaign manager Rick Davis flew to McCain’s cabin in Sedona, Ariz., a few days ago to confer, and another meeting about the choice was held with top aides Wednesday.

The news leaked on the third night of the Democratic National Convention, detracting attention from speeches by former President Bill Clinton and the Democratic ticket mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

Don’t be surprised if first word of McCain’s pick arrives even earlier than Friday in an attempt to trample on Obama’s big moment. The key word there is attempt.

Personally, my fingers are crossed for the return of Joe Lieberman to a presidential ticket. A question for all the political junkies out there: Has anyone ever lost the race for Vice President twice, but under different parties? If not, then perhaps it’s time for Joe to find his political legacy…because the Republican base would be shattered with him on the ticket. Rove isn’t always right, but he’s right on this one, and his personal choice is fairly obvious.

“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.

From his perch on Fox, Rove has touted McCain’s fierce primary rival as strong vice presidential material.

“Romney is already vetted by the media, has strong executive experience both in business and in government, has an interesting story to tell with saving the U.S. Olympics, and also helps McCain deal with the economy, because he can speak to the economy with a fluency that McCain doesn’t have,” Rove said on “Fox News Sunday” in June.

So, can you feel the Joementum?

Have Mittens been bought for the fall?

Or could it be a woman?

Whoever it is, we’ll probably know before the lights are turned off for the evening at Invesco Field.
