Rambling On About Clinton

BY TAYLOR MARSH

Ambinder as exhibit A:

Would Clinton become a glorified PR tool for Obama if she accepted the job?
A Powell, rather than a Rice?

Rice wasn’t a PR tool? Seriously, I’d really like to know what he
thinks Rice accomplished, but better still, how she advanced anything at State
beyond being Bush’s pol.

Clinton met with Obama. This was expected at some point, even if the scuttlebutt about State
surprised many. But anyone who suspects Obama thinks he can make HRC a “glorified PR tool” is really desperate for something to write.

Greg Sargent uses the opportunity to write a headline quoting “Clintonites are Everywhere.” Yet he’s only quoting the authors of a piece over at the Politico. Sargent goes on to opine about the 1990s:

In the 1990s these then-younger players were heavily constrained by Clinton’s less-than-50% win, the ascendancy of conservative ideas, the eventual takeover of Congress by the GOP, and a media where power was much more concentrated in the hands of big news orgs and star columnists and pundit types. The result: Triangulation, cautious governance, achievements with a centrist gloss, and pitched battles with a press corps hell-bent on inflicting daily damage.

This is so predictable. It’s the sky is falling mentality from the usual suspects worrying that having Clintonites on board will amount to Obama changing his goals and policies. We can only hope Obama handles the economic crisis as well as WJC handled the deficit he received from the first Bush. Does anyone believe by now that Obama isn’t his own man and can stand up to anyone?

This is about making sure the cogs in the Obama Administration fit snugly and run tightly. No administrative mistakes, which the Clintonites can certainly help avoid. Anyone see Clinton’s political team around? (**crickets**) Obama’s smart, obviously a lot smarter than some of the people covering the Transition story.
