Cheney’s Appointment with The Hague

BY TAYLOR MARSH

Of course, he doesn’t have one, but it would be justified, using his latest admissions, which hang him out.

This is an
exit interview for the history books
. One that certainly isn’t about legacy
resurrection, something that cannot possibly be done where Vice President Dick
Cheney is concerned.

KARL: Did you authorize the tactics that were used against Khalid Sheikh
Mohammed?

CHENEY: I was aware of the program, certainly, and involved in helping get
the process cleared, as the agency in effect came in and wanted to know what
they could and couldn’t do. And they talked to me, as well as others, to explain
what they wanted to do. And I supported it.

KARL: In hindsight, do you think any of those tactics that were used against
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and others went too far?

CHENEY: I don’t.

[...] KARL: And on KSM, one of those tactics, of course, widely reported
was waterboarding. And that seems to be a tactic we no longer use. Even that
you think was appropriate?

CHENEY: I do.

Clearly, not only did Dick Cheney condone torture by the United States, but
he admits to “helping get the process cleared,” wherein he becomes
guilty of war crimes.

Of course, we knew this all along. However, the brazen way in which Mr. Cheney
proudly espouses torture, while simultaneously almost daring anyone to do anything
about it, reveals the spineless weakness of Congress, but also the American
citizenry, neither of whom have shown any outrage on the scale fitting Cheney’s
extra-constitutional machinations.

In his retirement, I hope Mr. Cheney does a lot of traveling. …and on one
of his trips it would be fitting justice if some industrious government body
comes down on him like a ton of naked Abu Ghraib tortured bodies, forcing him
to answer for what he’s done as vice president.

But it’s more likely that Bush-Cheney will ride into history as the teflon
Administration, with only a hurled size 10 shoe to show for their executive
overreach and horrific atrocities.
