Politics and Beyond

Farewell to one of the best shows on TV ever, “Boston Legal.” We never missed taping it at our house. Whether talking about substantive issues in the news, the silly stuff, or the reality of humanity, David E. Kelly, James Spader, William Statner, et al. always scored. They will be missed.

Another media tidbit is the news from NBC on Jay Leno moving to 10 p.m., which means that NBC is scuttling the scripts in that hour. Brilliant money maker move. The LA Times thinks it’s “risky.” What do they do if it flops? I may be the only one, but I’m sorry to see “My Own Worst Enemy” go. But 10 p.m. became a black hole this season. “Mentalist” is a huge hit. It’s the lead.

As for non-BLOGORAMA political news, which got buried by Blago, the AP is trying to make a story out of a non-event. If this was about two men it wouldn’t get written. But because it’s about Clinton and Rice, of course, one media source has to drum up drama. Thanks Blago! You buried it.

The greatest female talent of our time was finally, at long last, after way too much time passed, given her due as a Kennedy Center honoree. No one deserves it more.

Also wanted to comment on John King taking over for Wolf Blitzer on Sunday. I’m a fan of King, who I believe is as straight shooter as they come on cable. He’s earned it.

As for David Gregory on “Meet the Press,” the interview at the end of the show yesterday with Tom Brokaw was really touching to me. It had an immodest humanity to it that you rarely see expressed. There is genuine appreciation and affection between the two men that was clear yesterday. For me, Gregory was really the only choice. I’ve always liked “Stretch,” as long as he stays on the straight news/journalism side. When he gets into political analysis he falters. Gregory also has few prejudices where certain politicians are concerned.

But all the networks should take note. Rachel Maddow, and Campbell Brown are the ones hosting the best shows on cable right now.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

D’oh!

Two must reads today on Afghanistan: Brad FriedmanSpencer Ackerman.
