Republicans Target Union in Bailout Stall

BY TAYLOR MARSH

What we’ve been talking about around here continues. The GOP stopped the auto bailout from being approved, demanding more from UAW.

A $14 billion auto industry bailout bill stalled in the Senate on Thursday, and Republicans demanded upfront concessions from the United Auto Workers as the price for support needed for passage. UAW officials were in talks with key lawmakers, congressional officials said, although it wasn’t clear what, if any, givebacks the union was willing to discuss.

Remember how quickly the GOP wanted to help their corporate pals on Wall Street? I guess blue collar workers just aren’t their style.

Now, I’m not crazy about the bridge loan either, but I was flat against the Wall Street bailout. I just believe that letting all those car industry jobs disappear would make it even harder for Obama to bring our economy back. None of this is particularly appetizing.

At least we once again know where Republicans stand. It’s not on the side of union workers and good paying jobs, which is the foundation of our middle class. No doubt this story will make them crazy, too.
