–updated–
Stimulus. Mimulus. I understand that Obama wants his economic plan to be bi-partisan, but that he’s obviously working himself to the degree he is to get approval from Republicans reminds me of the play of children at recess. Nice exercise, but at some point reality of learning comes into play. The learning being ignored is that giving Republicans the spotlight on the stimulus bill only gives them power they don’t have right now.
Democrats are worried too, but not because the stimulus goes too far.
Republican criticism of the stimulus package that the House will vote on tonight has focused on its soaring price tag, but some Democrats on Capitol Hill and other administration supporters are voicing a separate critique: that the plan may fall short in its broader goal of transforming the American economy over the long term….For some House Democrats, the problem is less a matter of balancing the short and long term than a shortage of focus and will on the part of the administration. Their disappointment centers on the relatively small amount devoted to long-lasting infrastructure investments in favor of spending on a long list of government programs. While each serves a purpose, the critics say, they add up to less than the sum of their parts, and fall far short of the transformative New Deal-like vision many of them had entertained.
The bill to be voted on today includes $30 billion for roads and bridges, $9 billion for public transit and $1 billion for inter-city rail — less than 5 percent of the package’s total spending. Administration officials have said they did not push for more infrastructure spending because of concerns about how many projects are “shovel ready” — a view that House members say is held most strongly by Lawrence H. Summers, Obama’s chief economic adviser. [...]
I’ve got to tell you, I’m not just a little concerned. For one thing, I will never get why Dems are stripping different things out of the bill in order to appease Republicans of anything. Now, whether the optics of the contraceptive money was smart is one issue, but can anyone doubt preventing pregnancies in poor women saves money and effort in the long run? It was stripped because of how it sounded on wingnut radio. Okay. But hearing more from Democrats in the House, put on top of the fact that Republicans were impressed with Obama but haven’t changed their minds that were made up from the start, I’ve got to wonder about all this work to get Republicans on board. Sometimes chasing cover is just that.
Segue to David Sirota, with whom I agree totally.
Let me reiterate a really fundamental point here. I’m going to put it in all caps, in bold and in italics because its so friggin’ fundamental: HOUSE REPUBLICANS, BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FILIBUSTER, ARE THE MOST POLITICALLY IRRELEVANT GROUP OF PEOPLE IN ALL OF AMERICAN POLITICS. David Sirota :: Obama’s Conflicting Signals After Meeting With Irrelevant House Republicans. They have not a single shred of legislative power to stop, amend or reform an economic stimulus package, unless Obama gives it to them by giving them attention. Why Obama would spend time meeting with them is inexplicable. Why, if AP is right, he would consider loading down the economic recovery package with their wholly discredited tax cuts is beyond inexplicable – it’s ludicrous. And remember another point I’m going to put in bold face and italics: NOBODY HAS MADE ANY SUBSTANTIVE CASE THAT ANY TAX CUTS THE REPUBLICANS ARE PUSHING ARE BETTER FOR JOB CREATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH THAN PUTTING THE MONEY INTO MORE PUBLIC SPENDING.
Obama’s not going to get cover through Republicans jumping on his bandwagon. He better make sure Democrats feel it’s worth it and will supply it.
UPDATE: You all may appreciate this, but Obama today gave Washingtonians grief for being wimps about weather, saying people need “some flinty Chicago toughness.” Evidently, Obama’s kids were off school because of weather. “Because of what? Ice,” quipped Obama. Additionally, here are the biz leaders present for the confab before he spoke: Steve Appleton, Chairman, President and CEO, Micron Technology David Barger, CEO, Jet Blue Greg Brown, President and Co-CEO, Motorola, Inc. I think President Obama should have a meeting with the whinners of the GOP and explain to them that they lost…BIG TIME. That he dosen’t need the support of a single, NOT A SINGLE repugnantklaner to get his legislation passed. He, unlike the repugnantklan when they were in the majority is attempting to be inclussive but there is a limit to his, the Democatic Party and the Electorate’s patiance.
While this is going on every effort should be made to point out to the Electorate the differance between President Obama’s attempts at inclusivity contrasted with the authortarian/dictatorial behavior of the repugs while they held power. Every effort should be made bu EVERY Democrate who speaks to or is interviewed by the media to make Rush limpwithnoballs the face of the repugnantklan party.
Whenever someone thinks republican I want them to see an image in their mind of a fat, sweating, white, male, mean spirited, racist blowhard.
I want them to hear in their minds this jackass saying he wants President Obama and incidentally AMERICA fail. For politicol reasons and spite. That THEY, the Electorate should lose their Homes, Jobs and Healthcare because this fat, drug addicted coward of a draft dodger is whinning because the repugnantklan lost.
I’m not holding my breath, but that’s what I would advise President Obama and the Dems to do.
secular I agree with you one hundred percent. The Democrats better get the lead out of their a@@es and get some backbone. They have a history of allowing these Repugs to dictate what is good for this country and after the last eight years we’ve seen where that’s gotten us. They need to marginalize the Repubs and their inflexible ideology. This country is not just for rich cats, it’s for all of us.
Hey guys!
So glad to check into my former playground from overseas (Berlin) and see some of my old friends.
Secularh, you are still the greatest poster in all the Internets.
Taylor, how has life been for you in the DC area?
I want to see Republicans crushed, crushed. The only thing I have to tell them is “cry me a river and jump in it.”
Hey ‘Blue! Howzit hanging? Man, my family may be in your neck of the woods come May: my sister-in-law is getting married. I am so proud of her especially knowing that the european-style “socialistic” medical system helped to save her life and covered her treatments there and in the USA.
Now, the Democrats simply cannot let the Repugs dictate this thing! They have been an utter failure and need to be crushed for what they have done to this country. The Obama administration and its surrogates need to hit the media hard and heavy.
Heated blushing cheeks, hands clasped behind back while one toe traces random patterns in the sand in front of me…awwwww shucks!!
Obama put the welcome mat out for the Republicans to put up or shut-up. If they are serious about a concerted, less-partisan approach to government prove it. If not then they will be seen asobstructionist who put the country at risk for political gain.

One can only hope, one can only hope.
There is no need to compromise with the GOP. They had control for most of the past 8 years and their ideas didn’t work. Sure, talk nice, but ram this thing through right now!
Imagine people saying the stimulus bill has too much spending. What do you think a stimulus bill is supposed to do??? Tax cuts for businesses have NOT stimulated much, except higher bonuses for the CEOs.
Hey all…
I don’t know what happened, but a duplicate post went up today in place of the post I wanted.
It’s now changed out.
Please read it, especially Sirota’s part at the end.
Sorry about the snafu.
Hey all ..
sorry about the false alarm yesterday about ‘Hillary live on TV” David Shuster announced it and then it never happened ( or it happened after I went to work)
My biggest fear with President Obama is that his bottom line ( perhaps unconscious) is the need to be viewed in history as a modern day “Abe Lincoln”. I do not agree with his pandering to a party that sold us a war, participated in bankrupting our country while taking food out of the mouths of babes to line the pockets of their filthy rich friends.
IF Hillary would have tried this tactic can you imagine the absolute outrage from the likes of Kos and factory?

I love it. Thank God a few are speaking out …
including you.
Its very frustrating to see the Repubs still in the discussion regarding all our futures.
But is also sweet to see the optics and contrast of the coverage.
Story one: American’s lose 50K plus jobs on Monday, President Obama says daily and convincingly how much he wants to help families
Story two: Republicans are dragging their feet on the recovery package to help Americans, they won’t vote for it
Story three: Rush says he wants President Obama to fail
Rinse, and repeat….
The more Obama draws them out, the more they obstruct and act the same, the worse they look outside of their base, and the more votes they loose in 2010/2012. It was hilarious yesterday after the meeting, seeing on the Republican blow-hards saying how great Obama was…its the Dems in congress’ fault, not his. They are soooooo stupid, and got played.
Now, whether the optics of the contraceptive money was smart is one issue, but can anyone doubt preventing pregnancies in poor women saves money and effort in the long run?
taylor Marsh
Taylor – my point exactly about the family planning provision being stripped. What people don’t understand is that by allowing a woman to control her own fertility opens doors to other opportunities such as training, education and employment. Women, especially poor women, lose those opportunities when they cannot control their own fertility. This has been proven in every developed country where women who have been allowed to control their fertility have been able to take advantage of the opportunities that are available. It’s been proven in this country. If family planning is not part of the stimulus package how do we give women, especially poor women and those living on the edge of poverty, an opportunity to make their lives better? Oh I guess these women are not part of the economic crisis. (snark)
Dems in congress’ fault, not his. They are soooooo stupid, and got played.
Audiegrl
I am hoping you are right
Maybe this is the long term plan. Engage them, be as reasonable as possible, bend over backwards to include them in the process and as time goes on it will be clear to EVERYONE ( including moderate Repugs) that no matter what we do it is all for nothing.
The only thing I guess of a stimulus package is that we, the American people, know where the money is going and on what projects it’s being spent and that the average American and the poor be part of it. I don’t like where this whole thing is going. When I voted for Obama I voted to take my country back and I expect Obama to give it back to me – lock, stock and barrel.
Mamamama my Sirota WOOOO!
Apologies to whoever did My Charona.
I LOVE these two paragraphes!!!!!
Just because Republicans are irrelevant in terms of the vote doesn’t mean their views shouldn’t be counted. Did we like it when it was the other way around?
I think what’s worse is that this pork package has become something to “win,” not something to weigh, consider CAREFULLY. My god, this is a huge package. There are many, many experts who think we should do nothing (or nearly nothing), and ride this out. We have AIG people getting $1 million bonuses, with OUR tax money. Overspending got into this. Overspending will merely increase the deficit. And Dems have loaded this puppy up with many, many items that will do nothing to stimulate the economy, but merely fulfill Dem wish lists. It’s insane.
What we need is to consider this, not treat it as political sport.
Oh I guess these women are not part of the economic crisis. (snark)

I think that’s exactly whats going on. Obama is a long term thinker/poker player. He knows they have no power, but that they desperately want to pretend they do to stay relevant. He used this similar ploy with the conservative pundits at the dinner.
Washington players are so used to have a transparently stupid short-term thinking President, that they don’t have a clue how to respond to a President who’s ‘got game’. They are not ready for President Obama.

I don’t think the Republicans will EVER be ready for Obama. That is the funny part. They still think they are in pre-economy meltdown American. When people lose their home and jobs they don’t give a fig whether the help the receive is from a Repub of Democrat, they just want help. Ideology be damned. They are sadly tone-deaf, but the voters will let them know the deal loud and clear.

I got a chuckle out of that Taylor. Growing up, we never had more than 1 or 2 snow days during the school year. And our weather in Northern Illinois in the winter is awful.
Our City Hall has never closed in my lifetime.
For the schools it was about losing funding on snow days, which you only get on days kids are in schools. Plus any snow days, had to be added to the end of the year in June, which kept kids from helping at the farm.

Hey JoeCHI …
I think the money will come through and this just a temporary ploy to play nice with the rabbid right wing… distastful as it is.
I suspect I might be a party of one on this, but IMO he has taken right approach. Somewhere in the not-too-distant future the subject of unfunded liabilities will have to be addressed, and he will need to work with the Republicans (especially since many Democrats don’t even want to bring up the subject).
Long term, this is by far the biggest financial issue for this country. Social Security will go belly up one day, but Medicare will be bankrupt much earlier. When we address this mess (not to mention local and state pensions and health plans), it will help if we have a two-party system that can work together.
Bush had the right idea to at least bring up Social Security, but he is such an inarticulate buffoon that it would not have mattered what his ideas were.
Bottom line is I expect huge changes in the social welfare programs to come pretty soon down the road, I just want a Democratic president to be the one to oversee these changes. Because if we end up with a Republican in 2012, it’s hard to imagine it will be anyone reasonable.

Having grown up in Buffalo we didn’t know what a “snow day” was. we went to school. Then living in the Artic at 91 degrees latitude my son was told that if they closed school everytime it snowed which was every day, the kids would never get an education.
I see this bill as very weak, and I doubt it will be any more effective than the last stimulus bill pushed through by Bush.
It’s too much spending, not enough real stimulus.
From a PR standpoint, it could be a big flop. When people find out that money was allocated to ACORN, under investigation in how many states now?, they will flip out.
To me? Obama’s “big” message doesn’t line up with the bill.
Is it really an emergency to fund Head Start now?
I don’t get it. I think a lot of people won’t get it.
But it will be too late. He’s riding off of popularity, and I’m sure it will pass.
It won’t pass with Republican support, however.

Hillary said during the primary that you compromise where you can and then do what you have to do. In other words “I won”. She’s been in this business a long time – Obama, not so much. While I really admire his lofty goal of bipartisanship and unity, some things matter more – universal health care, jobs (permanent ones), keeping your home, infrastructure rebuilding, etc. I just hope he keeps all this in the back of his mind (or front of it). I trust he knows what he is doing, though. I want to give him a chance to work this through. But sooner or later the rubber meets the road.

But to have them, on a school bus, mix in with gridlock traffic on icy roads with plenty of fender benders and drivers who moved there from the Southern States, Mexico or equatorial Africa? Not so much.
Audie, I’m sorry, but Keith O. couldn’t debunk anything for me.

The issue with Republicans and the “stimulus” bill, which many of us see as nothing more than a rushed-through spending bill, is echoed, oddly enough, by Iran.
He says, essentially the same thing.
Words are great. Let’s see the real decisions.
So far, I’m seeing campaign rhetoric.
This “stimulus” package is underwhelming.
I am so sorry to hear that the family planning money was dropped from the stimulus bill. I had hoped that Obama would do better for women and their reproductive health than he did IL. I remember the nasty comments and laughter that I was subjected to when I brought up the present votes in IL. I had hoped he would change. Alas here I am crying out from under the bus.
I think it would be most fair to judge Obama on his game plan after we’ve seen it in play for a month or more.
GEB…..women don’t need free condoms. They need health care centers, which will also address family planning.
Krugman is right.
