Caroline Kennedy’s Public Saga Continues

Now it’s because of taxes? The New York Times reports:

Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing. [...]

Seriously?

I wasn’t going to cover this debacle again, but the latest reporting of yet another excuse on Caroline Kennedy’s serial embarrassment pulled me back in. If you’re going to pull your name, pull it, and make sure everyone is clear, especially the man who might appoint you. Talk about mass baffonery.

Never in the history of aborted campaigns has a woman so botched her own public roll out. Incompetent. Confusing. Incoherent. Just by watching her the last weeks New Yorkers should be thanking the ghost of Patrick Moynihan that they didn’t get stuck with this woman as senator.

Could Caroline Kennedy have been handled any worse? Doubtful.

In introducing her boss, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton once again continued to put down the doubters.

“…We want to do our very best work in furtherance of your goals. … I pledge to you on behalf of the thousands of dedicated public servants who serve you on behalf of diplomacy and development our very best efforts. It is an honor to be working to fulfill the goals you have set for our country. Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.”

Obama responded in kind.

“… I’ve given you an early gift: Hillary Clinton.” – President Barack Obama

Chuck Todd Asks Dumbest Question of the Day

Robert Gibbs gave his first press briefing today. Chuck Todd jumped in: Will President Obama re-sign the executive orders? You know, because Obama was given the oath of office again. All that’s going on and this is Todd’s most pressing subject? Wow, just wow.

Todd was obviously thrown in the deep end of the pool when NBC gave him this job. He proved he needs arm floaties to keep from drowning.

Gillibrand Surfaces as Frontrunner for Clinton Seat

This will cause indigestion among many, but it’s being reported by several news sources: Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand. Daily Beast:

… Politically, Gillibrand, who is 41, is a conservative Democrat and a member of the Blue Dog caucus, which might make her more palatable to some of the more right-leaning areas outside the city. You might call her a bizarro version of Sarah Palin: she proudly touts her 100 percent rating from the National Rifle Association, and has two young children, aged 4 years old and six months old. …

Daily News reports the same scuttlebutt, with the announcement from Paterson to come tomorrow.

Clinton Arrives at State to Applause

Back to work for Clinton, as she was welcomed with wild applause at State.

“I believe with all my heart that this is a new era for America. President Obama set the tone with his inaugural address. The Obama-Biden administration is committed to advancing America’s national security, furthering America’s interest and respecting and exemplifying America’s values around the world. There are three legs to the stool of American foreign policy: defense, diplomacy and development and we are responsible for two of the three legs. And we will make clear as we go forward that diplomacy and development are essential tools in achieving the long-term objectives of the United States. [...] At the heart of smart power are smart people and you are those people. … This is going to be a challenging time, and it will require 21st-century tools and solutions to meet our problems and seize our opportunities. I’m gonna be asking a lot of you, I want you to think outside the proverbial box. I want you to give me the best advice you can, I want you to understand there is nothing that I welcome more than a good debate, and the kind of dialogue that will make us better. [...] This is not going to be easy. … It’s gonna be hard. But if it weren’t hard somebody else could do it besides the professionals of the foreign service… ” – Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton

Clinton will host Obama and Biden at around 2:30 p.m. (eastern), give or take.

UPDATE… Thought I’d also add something that was in Obama’s executive orders today: The Executive Order directs the Secretary of State to seek international cooperation aimed at achieving the transfers of detainees. Tall order, because foreign governments haven’t been receptive to receiving their citizens during Bush.

Obama to Shut Gitmo, End C.I.A. Prisons

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrdZda7kcZc&feature=player_embedded

Important as anything Obama could do, beyond Iraq or anything else:

President Obama is expected to sign executive orders Thursday directing the Central Intelligence Agency to shut what remains of its network of secret prisons and ordering the closing of the Guantánamo detention camp within a year, government officials said.

…And the orders would bring to an end a Central Intelligence Agency program that kept terrorism suspects in secret custody for months or years, a practice that has brought fierce criticism from foreign governments and human rights activists. They will also prohibit the C.I.A. from using coercive interrogation methods, requiring the agency to follow the same rules used by the military in interrogating terrorism suspects, government officials said. [...]

UPDATE: Just received from Obama’s office, thought you might be interested:

Executive Order regarding Guantanamo Bay detainees

Executive Order requires closure of the Guantanamo detention center no later than one year from the date of the Order. Closure of the facility is the ultimate goal but not the first step. The Order establishes a review process with the goal of disposing of the detainees before closing the facility.

The Order sets up an immediate review to determine whether it is possible to transfer detainees to third countries, consistent with national security. If transfer is not approved, a second review will determine whether prosecution is possible and in what forum. The preference is for prosecution in Article III courts or under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), but military commissions, perhaps with revised authorities, would remain an option. If there are detainees who cannot be transferred or prosecuted, the review will examine the lawful options for dealing with them. The Attorney General will coordinate the review and the Secretaries of Defense, State, and Homeland Security as well as the DNI and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will participate.

The Executive Order directs the Secretary of State to seek international cooperation aimed at achieving the transfers of detainees.

The Order directs the Secretary of Defense to halt military commission proceedings pending the results of the review.

Finally, the Executive Order requires that conditions of confinement at Guantanamo, until its closure, comply with Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions and all other applicable laws.

Executive Order regarding Detainee Policy

Executive Order creates a Special Task Force, co-chaired by the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense, to conduct a review of detainee policy going forward. The group will consider policy options for apprehension, detention, trial, transfer, or release of detainees. Other Task Force participants include the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Special Task Force must submit its report to the President within 180 days.

Executive Order regarding Interrogation

Executive Order revokes Executive Order 13440 that interpreted Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. It requires that all interrogations of detainees in armed conflict, by any government agency, follow the Army Field Manual interrogation guidelines. The Order also prohibits reliance on any Department of Justice or other legal advice concerning interrogation that was issued between September 11, 2001 and January 20, 2009.

The Order requires all departments and agencies to provide the ICRC access to detainees in a manner consistent with Department of Defense regulations and practice. It also orders the CIA to close all existing detention facilities and prohibits it from operating detention facilities in the future.

Finally, the Order creates a Special Task Force with two missions. The Task Force will conduct a review of the Army Field Manual interrogation guidelines to determine whether different or additional guidance is necessary for the CIA. It will also look at rendition and other policies for transferring individuals to third countries to be sure that our policies and practices comply with all obligations and are sufficient to ensure that individuals do not face torture and cruel treatment if transferred. This Task Force will be led by the Attorney General with the Secretary of Defense and the Director of National Intelligence as co-Vice Chairs.

OBAMA RETAKES OATH

The story goes like this: The first African American to be sworn in didn’t take the oath of office, so… blah-blah-blah… all hell breaks loose from a lawsuit or –insert your favorite theory here–.

This from White House Counsel Greg Craig:

“We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the President was sworn in appropriately yesterday. But the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice Roberts administered the oath a second time.”

From the pool report: When we walked into Map Room, Obama was on the couch, and Roberts was in a chair to his left. For the swearing in, Obama and Roberts stood across room from where they had sat, with us and staff in loose semicircle. … “We decided it was so much fun…” Obama joked while sitting on a couch. Obama stood and walked over to make small talk with pool as roberts donned his black robe. “Are you ready to take the oath?” Roberts asked. “I am, and we’re going to do it very slowly,” Obama replied. Oath took 25 seconds.

It was done without a Bible. Scandal at dawn.

Wanted: Senator for New York

According to The New York Post, also announced by other news organizations. The report goes for the bone:

Sources said the reason Paterson had decided not to tap the daughter of John F. Kennedy was her poor performances in media interviews and in in private sessions with various officials. Caroline Kennedy tonight withdrew her name from consideration to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate after learning that Gov. David Paterson wasn’t going to choose her, The Post has learned.Kennedy’s decision removes the highest-profile name in the ring to step into Clinton’s now-vacant seat, as she departs after getting confirmed today as President Obama’s Secretary of State.

Sources said the reason Paterson had decided not to tap the daughter of John F. Kennedy was her poor performances in media interviews and in in private sessions with various officials.

Smackdown. Next?

TO ADD… No, really, do we move on? Seriously, not long after this post was up reports rebutting the Post and others, saying that Caroline hasn’t withdrawn her name. Who knows?

New York still needs a senator.

The Era of Bush Secrecy is Over

Gone but not forgotten.

Undoing damage, day one.

Let’s start with Bush era policies on Freedom of Information Act requests, as revealed through John Ashcroft:

“When you carefully consider FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests and decide to withhold records… you can be assured that the Department of Justice will defend your decisions.” – Attorney General John Ashcroft, Inter-agency Memo, October 2001 (source: WashingtonPost.com, 3.3.02)

President Obama changed that today:

MEMORANDUM FOR THE HEADS OF EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES

SUBJECT: Freedom of Information Act

A democracy requires accountability, and accountability requires transparency. As Justice Louis Brandeis wrote, “sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.” In our democracy, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which encourages accountability through transparency, is the most prominent expression of a profound national commitment to ensuring an open Government. At the heart of that commitment is the idea that accountability is in the interest of the Government and the citizenry alike.

The Freedom of Information Act should be administered with a clear presumption: In the face of doubt, openness prevails. The Government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears. Nondisclosure should never be based on an effort to protect the personal interests of Government officials at the expense of those they are supposed to serve. In responding to requests under the FOIA, executive branch agencies (agencies) should act promptly and in a spirit of cooperation, recognizing that such agencies are servants of the public.

All agencies should adopt a presumption in favor of disclosure, in order to renew their commitment to the principles embodied in FOIA, and to usher in a new era of open Government. The presumption of disclosure should be applied to all decisions involving FOIA.

The presumption of disclosure also means that agencies should take affirmative steps to make information public. They should not wait for specific requests from the public. All agencies should use modern technology to inform citizens about what is known and done by their Government. Disclosure should be timely.

I direct the Attorney General to issue new guidelines governing the FOIA to the heads of executive departments and agencies, reaffirming the commitment to accountability and transparency, and to publish such guidelines in the Federal Register. In doing so, the Attorney General should review FOIA reports produced by the agencies under Executive Order 13392 of December 14, 2005. I also direct the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to update guidance to the agencies to increase and improve information dissemination to the public, including through the use of new technologies, and to publish such guidance in the Federal Register.

This memorandum does not create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

The Director of the Office of Management and Budget is hereby authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

BARACK OBAMA

Executive privilege now has stronger guidelines, too.

Sec. 4. Claim of Executive Privilege by Former President. (a) Upon receipt of a claim of executive privilege by a living former President, the Archivist shall consult with the Attorney General (through the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel), the Counsel to the President, and such other executive agencies as the Archivist deems appropriate concerning the Archivist’s determination as to whether to honor the former President’s claim of privilege or instead to disclose the Presidential records notwithstanding the claim of privilege. Any determination under section 3 of this order that executive privilege shall not be invoked by the incumbent President shall not prejudice the Archivist’s determination with respect to the former President’s claim of privilege.(b) In making the determination referred to in subsection (a) of this section, the Archivist shall abide by any instructions given him by the incumbent President or his designee unless otherwise directed by a final court order. The Archivist shall notify the incumbent and former Presidents of his determination at least 30 days prior to disclosure of the Presidential records, unless a shorter time period is required in the circumstances set forth in section 1270.44 of the NARA regulations. Copies of the notice for the incumbent President shall be delivered to the President (through the Counsel to the President) and the Attorney General (through the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel). The copy of the notice for the former President shall be delivered to the former President or his designated representative.

Eric Holder, once he’s confirmed as attorney general, will have real responsibilities and new independence from the executive. The presidency is not a monarchy.

MADAM SECRETARY

SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON

Vote: 94 Yeas; 2 Nays (DeMint, Vitter)

Applause breaks out in the Senate chamber.

At last seems to be the theme of the day, with a nod to John McCain for strongly suggesting a unanimous consent, though Republicans ignored him, demanding a full roll call vote. In straining to send a message to President Obama, Republicans only managed to prove why they earned their place in the wilderness. There was never a doubt of Clinton’s confirmation, so making a point that they wouldn’t be pushed around Republicans do what they do best, obstruct. They lost again, managing to seem small in the process.

This is yet another great moment for President Obama and his administration. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton brings to the job deep intellect, passionate curiosity about the world, as well as a reputation and presence around the globe, which will serve President Obama well.

Secretary of State Clinton will be a fierce advocate for President Obama’s policies. It’s yet another proud day for Democrats, for the people of America, as well as for women around the world. We could not have a more fierce advocate than Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

President Obama signaled today that one of the first things on his list was the Middle East, through the news that former Sen. George Mitchell may be appointed as an envoy to that region. The message an appointment of Mitchell sends is one of fairness to both sides, something that will no doubt make some nervous. But it’s the correct move. Mitchell did intense good work in Northern Ireland. His diplomatic skills are proven.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will make a strong partner for President Obama’s diplomatic outreach and an invaluable partner for Mr. Mitchell.

Republicans Put Clinton on Hold Until After Lunch

VOTE HOLD UPDATES: VOTE IN PROGRESS… VOTE TO BE HELD AROUND 4:00 P.M. Republicans reject McCain’s call for a unanimous consent vote; demand a roll call.
3:25: Sen. Specter speaking on behalf of Clinton. (still waiting for a vote…)
3:11: Durbin speaking, citing Hillary’s “How do you treat your women?” standard. Still waiting… while Durbin reminds his esteemed Senate colleagues that WJC’s foundation is not a mafia organization, but has helped people around the world. No good deed goes unpunished, especially if you’re a Clinton.
2:57 eastern: Lunch passes and we’re STILL WAITING (… for the Republicans to get their act together.)

Senator Cornyn, after what was described as a “heated discussion” yesterday, said today he would vote for Clinton’s confirmation, but here we sit waiting for the Republicans to get their act together. This delay is absurd, as Senators McCain, Collins and Graham all said. The other Republicans have acted in bad faith on this one, as our challenges across the globe mount. This is especially true since Clinton will be confirmed. Senator Kerry did his best to move it forward, with McCain’s help, as even Lugar wanted a unanimous consent vote yesterday. This is a prime example why Republicans have lost credibility. This harsh partisan nonsense led by Vitter and Cornyn. Senator Kerry also read part of Sen. Lugar’s statement, because he was out ill today, saying he believes in Clinton’s integrity.

Then Senator McCain said, “we shouldn’t delay” and must move forward, also citing the “fragile cease fire” between Israel and Hamas. “We need to immediately… by voice vote move forward…” also saying he’s aware of approval ratings, but also Clinton’s qualifications. The American people want “us” to get to work. McCain showing already that he will be an asset to President Obama.

Sen. Susan Collins gave a ringing endorsement of Clinton as secretary of state, recalling a trip to Afghanistan they took together. Collins repeated the description that Hillary is “the epitome of a big leaguer.”

But here we wait until after lunch, because for Republicans, politics is more important than the challenges facing President Obama, for which he’ll need Hillary Clinton on the job. Frustrating in the extreme.

National Service and Song… and Middle East Work

When the humming of “Amazing Grace” began… then that voice continued the vocal prayer, it was a moment of magic. It rendered former President Clinton slack-jawed and received a standing ovation, led by Vice President Joe Biden. That’s my kind of church service, one that revels in song as well as scripture. “America the beautiful” by the choir followed, with the Obamas, Bidens and Clintons listening in side by side.

[HTML1]

Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori gave the closing prayer today at the National Cathedral. She’s the leader of the Episcopal church (in the video above), a tremendous speaker, someone I’ve had the honor of meeting, as well as hearing.

The service today reminded me of why I so love the church I’ve belonged to in L.A. The beautiful music that is part of every service in the Episcopal church inspires deep reverence. The choir at All Saint’s in Los Angeles is unparalleled. On Easter, people arrive hours ahead to get a seat. It’s a concert every Sunday. Today I was once again reminded of the beauty of song in service. Maybe I’ll find it again in Washington, D.C. It would be a tremendous addition to my daily meditation.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozF0YqyPXmE

To add… just got a statement from Robert Gibbs, his first as press secretary, on what else President Obama has been doing today:

“This morning, the President placed phone calls to four Middle Eastern leaders: President Mubarak of Egypt, Prime Minister Olmert of Israel, King Abdullah of Jordan, and President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority. He used this opportunity on his first day in office to communicate his commitment to active engagement in pursuit of Arab-Israeli peace from the beginning of his term, and to express his hope for their continued cooperation and leadership. In the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, he emphasized his determination to work to help consolidate the ceasefire by establishing an effective anti-smuggling regime to prevent Hamas from rearming, and facilitating in partnership with the Palestinian Authority a major reconstruction effort for Palestinians in Gaza. He pledged that the United States would do its part to make these efforts successful, working closely with the international community and these partners as they fulfill their responsibilities as well. The President appreciated the spirit of partnership and warm nature of these calls.”

At Last

We’re toasting the Obama’s tonight, as is the entire nation. That there will reportedly be a gathering of friends at the White House to toast President Obama in the wee hours is fitting. But amidst the party atmosphere comes news that President Obama has ordered a pause in Gitmo military tribunals. At last may be a song, but it applies across the board as Obama takes charge.

President Obama in white tie was the epitomy of class. First lady Michelle Obama wore a dress by Jason Wu. Vice President Joe Biden wore the traditional black tie, with Jill Biden in a deep red strapless dress.

Commander in chief Obama was immediately greeted with cheers.

“It’s a proud moment for us,” said Brigadier General Steven Huber, commander of the base, where many of the soldiers hail from Illinois, also Obama’s home state. “He is our new commander-in-chief and we will serve him with honour,” he told AFP.

But tomorrow, the party ends and the work begins. It starts with a meeting with President Obama’s “war council.”

Obama was summoning his holdover defense secretary, Robert Gates, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, to the White House, along with other members of his National Security Council, to discuss a way ahead in the war, according to two senior military officers. … The war in Afghanistan also was to be discussed, with the commander overseeing both conflicts, Gen. David Petraeus, scheduled to attend. Also scheduled to participate via videoteleconference were Gen. David McKiernan, the top commander in Afghanistan, and Gen. Ray Odierno, the top commander in Iraq. [...]

Song, Benediction and Celebration

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJX0cuUcvvw&eurl

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBI6c4yBJAU&eurl

“I’m a lefty. Get used to it,” Obama quipped as he signed his name. – CNN

What a celebration. ..and there was song, Aretha, who else? …and John Williams’ “Air and Simple Gifts.” As for being there, I’m being flooded with emails that it’s simply a disaster. The problem for people with tickets seems insurmountable and very frustrating. So, if you’re watching it at home, be glad. You’ve got the best seat around.

It’s also being reported that Senator Teddy Kennedy will be released from the hospital tomorrow. Exhale.

“Senator Edward Kennedy experienced a seizure today while attending a luncheon for President Barack Obama in the U.S. Capitol. … After testing, we believe the incident was brought on by simple fatigue. Senator Kennedy is awake, talking with family and friends, and feeling well. He will remain at the Washington Hospital Center overnight for observation, and will be released in the morning.”

Rev. Lowery’s Inauguration benediction is below (via Lynn Sweet). He showed Rick Warren how it’s done.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who has brought us thus far along the way, thou who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand — true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we’ve shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-EAdktK-Kc&eurl=http://taylormarsh.com/archives_view.php?id=28997&feature=player_embedded

For we know that, Lord, you’re able and you’re willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor or the least of these and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that, yes, we can work together to achieve a more perfect union. And while we have sown the seeds of greed — the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance.

And as we leave this mountaintop, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will.

Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little, angelic Sasha and Malia.

We go now to walk together, children, pledging that we won’t get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone, with your hands of power and your heart of love.

Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around — (laughter) — when yellow will be mellow — (laughter) — when the red man can get ahead, man — (laughter) — and when white will embrace what is right.

Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.

AUDIENCE: Amen!

REV. LOWERY: Say amen –

AUDIENCE: Amen!

REV. LOWERY: — and amen.

AUDIENCE: Amen! (Cheers, applause.)

Cornyn Obstructs Clinton Voice Vote

A reminder of remainders, if you will, and that the era of partisan politics is anything but over. Compliments of John Cornyn of Texas, there will be no voice confirmation vote for HRC, with her name withheld from the unanimous consent vote held later today.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s smooth ride to confirmation as secretary of state hit a small bump on Tuesday as one of her Republican colleagues blocked a vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination, citing ethical questions arising from donors to her husband’s charitable foundation.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas objected to including Mrs. Clinton’s name in a unanimous consent vote for several Cabinet nominees, scheduled for hours after the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama. The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, plans to hold a roll-call vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination on Wednesday, which she is expected to win easily. [...]

Gov. Paterson of New York will have a little more time to get comfortable with his choice, because Senator Clinton will not resign until she’s confirmed.

As the ‘War on Terror’ Turns

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. … On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. [...] So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: “Let it be told to the future world…that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].”President Barack Obama

[HTML1]

“You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you,” said President Obama today. Consider it a nod to the vanquished neocons. They would fall over dead if some use of force wasn’t presented from the new president. But Bush’s “war on terror” trilogy of the “axis of evil” ended today, nowhere to be heard. Still, everyone knows the brutality of the Bush-Cheney years will take time and deeds to undo. President Obama started today:

… Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort – even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus – and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West – know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. [...]

And amidst the grandeur an old hand of another party and time offered up the analysis. Patrick J. Buchanan nailed it, saying the Obama we saw today is different from the man we met two years ago. An “authoritative,” even “paternal” Obama stood before us today. As a former harsh critic of our new president, though I will always keep a wary eye out as is my role, the man we saw take the oath today has not only grown into the role of president, but into his place in history, earning what we saw on display today.

The world has the signs and now awaits President Obama’s first deeds.

President Obama: America is ‘Ready to Lead Once More’

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pknUNyc5r0I

“As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founder fathers faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man. A charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedient’s sake. And so, to all the other peoples and governments who are watching today, to the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born. Know that America is a friend to each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more. …” – President Barack Obama

In case you missed it, the carnage of the Bush-Cheney administration has been cut off like a withered limb.

President Obama’s speech today started slow and traveled through tedium, but once it got into the soul and spirit of what President Obama represents as heard through his rhetoric over the last years, the man who will lead us finally landed on the heart of what his presidency represents to us all. A turning of the page from what has come before on every level, but most specifically the changing of the guard from fear and the use of death turns, into something that has been manifest to encourage and inspire peoples and nations to follow the American lead because we stand for right, not just out of fear of our might.

Responsibility may have been the foundation of Obama’s speech, but it was not heard in just what we must do at home. President Obama today turned to the world to say that the United States of America has a duty to the world, as important as when the founders envisioned this land. To be the moral guide and inspiration of all that’s humanly possible through individual freedom, understanding that if America falls victim to our base fears, succumbing to the lowest human denominator, dreams of everyone around the world to rise above what divides us dies.

We will not give up America’s ideals for expedient’s sake. A new era has dawned.

Historic Crowd Waits for An Historic Presidency

“I am making a commitment to you as the next president, that we are going to make government work,” he told volunteers at Coolidge High. “But I can’t do it by myself. Michelle can’t do it by herself. Government can only do so much….If we’re waiting for someone else to do something, it never gets done.” – President-elect Barack Obama

When they met the Bushes at the White House today, Michelle Obama was carrying a gift.

When I listened to Karl Bernstein today one thing stood out. Talking about segregated Washington, D.C. and the shift that is happening today. The election of one man can make a difference, especially if that man is the African American named Barack Hussein Obama, the name he will use when he’s sworn in.

Last night on the “Daily Show,” Stewart had on Abderrahim Foukara of Arab Al Jazeera. The back and forth at the beginning of the interview was a classic. We did okay, didn’t we? We elected him? Are we cool now? Foukara laughed, but the message from Stewart came from us all.

The world loves Americans, but they’ve hated our government for many years now. That changes today.

…or so we hope.

Barack Obama has begun his presidency with grace, magnanimity and warnings of hard choices to come. Renewal and responsibility will be the watch words as he starts his first term, joined together in excitement and a charge to keep from the people who wait and watch.

Looking at the crowds in the city where I will soon live, a once segregated city, it reminds me of my youth in St. Louis at a time when Missouri was still very southern and still caught up in racial division and tensions. That’s how I relate to what Bernstein said today. I imagine the melting away of those divisions in a city that has held on to them for many years. To say I’m anticipating what awaits in Washington, D.C. is an understatement.

The Obamas obviously intend to be part of the city’s community. They will likely bring to D.C. a renaissance. That’s something I’ve seen happen before in a large city, when I lived in New York. It’s something to watch and I’ll be there to see it happen.

That’s why so many people are standing in freezing temperatures to witness Barack Obama become president. They want to witness, be present, for the swearing in of the man who will turn us towards the sun, leaving darkness at our back.

Rachel Maddow said today, that “if you’re a civics dork, this is bigger than Christmas.” But you don’t have to be a “civics dork” to feel that you’ve awaken on a morning excited about what you’ll get to see today. All you have to be is a citizen of the world who is praying for cooler leadership in these troubled times.

The real work of this nation, for all of us, begins today.
