The Only Heat on Rush is the Glow of the Spotlight

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z-OgbrCu_I

A petition is up at the DCCC to send Rush a message. Guess who’s signing on to it? Rush fans. Their side understands the value of radio. Our side has been behind on this for two decades. But it’s clear when Rush said he hoped Obama would fail that Dems felt an opening. They’re taking it.

So, I start getting emails. Here’s one:

Taylor, I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but when a sitting president begins to villify and demonize talk radio personalities or other media commentators against the backdrop of Shumer & Co’s threat of the “Fairness” Doctrine, we should all be at least skeptical of his intentions. May skepticism and distrust of government forever be the vanguard of liberty. Please be vigilant and fair in defending speech no matter your political beliefs. – LW

The notion that Rush’s free speech is in danger of being violated is preposterous. But the Fairness Doctrine scare runs deep and wide in wingnut radio audiences, no matter of association with a political party. Again, they know how to use the airwaves much better than we do. But make no mistake about it, media monopolies of the airwaves is an issue worth taking on. Time will tell if Dems will do it.

But I’m all for Rush being the “new face” of the Republican Party, but it’s clear some Republicans get how bad Rush is for their side.

Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., did not take kindly to this assessment in an interview with Politico Tuesday. “I think that our leadership, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, are taking the right approach,” Gingrey said. “I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party. You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn’t be or wouldn’t be good leaders, they’re not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.”Asked to respond to Gingrey, Limbaugh, in an email to Politico, wrote: “I’m sure he is doing his best but it does not appear to be good enough. He may not have noticed that the number of Republican colleagues he has in the House has dwindled. And they will dwindle more if he and his friends don’t show more leadership and effectiveness in battling the most left-wing agenda in modern history. And they won’t continue to lose because of me, but because of their relationship with the grassroots, which is hurting. Conservatives want leadership from those who claim to represent them. And we’ll know it when we see it.”

But be sure of one thing, Rush is eating this up. The only bad publicity for Rush is no publicity at all.

Taylor – I don’t understand the democrats being behind the curve on the use of the air waves. Why don’t they have you or someone like you on radio? You’d certainly get the message out not to mention you’d have some interesting callers, both pro and con. I’d like to see you take a neocon apart on radio. Wow that would be a riot.

  2. kris 28 January 2009 at 12:11 pm #

This is OT but for some reason I couldn’t comment on the previous thread.

Republicans are not the only ones opposed to the stimulus package as it is. There are Dems on the left and right who oppose it as well. I predict that not only the Repubs won’t vote for it but a good number of Dems won’t as well.

Oy, you’ve just expressed my life the last few years in a nut shell. I moved here to launch my radio show. I’ve been trying to get out ever since I found out that I wasn’t going to be able to continue it.

Air Am. has been a boon, as has the talents of Stephanie Miller, etc. But now Rep. own the stations and have a stranglehold on programming across the country. It will take concerted effort to go after that.

The good news is that Dems are way ahead on the tech side. See Obama.

    kris | 01.28.2009 – 12:11 pm | #

Not off topic, really. However, I think Dems are behind it, though many believe it doesn’t go far enough.

As for commenting, we can’t figure out why it’s happening. No other complaints coming in.

  5. angels81 28 January 2009 at 12:16 pm #

Kris, the stimulus package will pass in the house. There is no way democrats will hand Obama a defeat on this package.

Taylor – I hope you get your chance because the “progressives” really need someone who can be balanced (looking at both sides of an issue) and might I add honest and fair in their political analysis. I have found you to be very honest in your approach to political analysis.

  8. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:21 pm #

Sure, AG. The issue is that I never got into the radio biz to work as hard as you need to for good radio to do it for FREE.

We’ll take another look once I’m fully moved to D.C.

  9. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:21 pm #

    Me too, JA. Me too.

    Boeing lays off 10,000

  11. kris 28 January 2009 at 12:25 pm #

Oh I think the package will pass. I am not saying it won’t. I just think there is alot of reservation about it, particularly since a good amount of these funds won’t be used until 2019. And don’t get me wrong. I want it to work big time. I still think they need to fix the mortgage mess first and then everything else will follow.

Taylor – I don’t know what’s up with the commenting problem either. It has happened the last week or so and only seems to affect some threads. It’s okay though because eventually I get on. ;-)

  12. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:26 pm #

Good, kris. Feel free to email my webmaster, though. We love having you in here!

  13. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:29 pm #

I agree. I listen to Rush in the car. He’s on when I’m driving in the morning. Sometimes, it’s O’Reilly.

In short, he’s making hay off off of Obama’s remarks.

    He LOVES it.

    And so does his audience.

  14. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:32 pm #

How many hope Rush remains the “new face” of the GOP?

  15. kris 28 January 2009 at 12:33 pm #

    Thanks Taylor. Love being here.

So when you move to D.C. what are the plans? I saw you on CNN during the Dem Convention and you were good. How about being part of “the best political team on television”????

  16. kris 28 January 2009 at 12:34 pm #

BTW I signed up for emails from SarahPac so I can share with you all. Should be interesting no?

  17. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:36 pm #

Rush is apart from the party. He’s, well, Rush.

The notion that they could tell him to “back off” is hilarious to me, anyway.

That tells me how out-of-touch they are.

    Lordy.

I’d say, personally, he hits a real point of debate about 30% of the time, and that’s enough to keep people interested.

  18. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:37 pm #

Well, kris, I’ll continue doing my work. The rest will unfold naturally.

Great subject for “in the news,” kris.

  19. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:37 pm #

And, btw, Rush has nothing to do with the “new face of the GOP.

  20. lynnette 28 January 2009 at 12:37 pm #

You may have better luck in D.C., Taylor. I think you would make a good radio host, especially with your foreign policy analyses. Lord knows, the MSM commentators, for the most part, are lightweights and biased. Very few are credible. We really need a progressive that is truly “fair and balanced”. Maybe you’ll make a connection that can help you.

  21. TaylorMarsh 28 January 2009 at 12:38 pm #

No according to the traditional media, AnninCA, who is pushing this line. I’ll oblige by driving it home.

‘One day after President Obama visited Capitol Hill, he is returning the favor by being host to about two dozen Democrats and Republicans on his turf. The event, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., is the first-of-a-kind gathering in the new administration and the latest sign that Mr. Obama is attempting to build relationships with Congress.’

  29. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:56 pm #

Joe the Plumber is the “guy in the street” deal.

    Nothing wrong with that approach.

I get a kick out of him. I thought he pulled the covers on many progressives, too, who hold others to ridiculous standards while giving their counterparts a complete pass.

I like Joe mostly because he doesn’t even pretend to be anyone he isn’t.

He’s just a regular guy, with an opinion. And he’s entitled to it, btw.

  30. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:58 pm #

I didn’t follow your last post, Taylor.

Rush isn’t a journalist to me, anyway. He’s a political entertainer.

Different from Jon Stewart, but in the same business gang.

    But a journalist?

    Hardly.

So I’m not quite following you.

  31. kris 28 January 2009 at 12:59 pm #

Thanks JA. Been busy looking for a job most days. Little tough in my area – the unemployment rate is 12% but I just keep trying.

Some days I can’t get in to comment and I don’t know why so I really am here most days, and no I am not in moderation. Just must be a problem with my laptop. It’s kind of strange because it isn’t consistent through all threads.

  32. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 12:59 pm #

  36. justlen 28 January 2009 at 1:09 pm #

Between Boeing and Microsoft we’re getting hammered up here. Still not as bad as California, though.

Boeing has pretty much made it clear the 787 is the last plane they are going to make in Washington.

  37. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 1:09 pm #

    Yuck…..Audie

Rush is also a bigoted buffoon who seems to have a major problem with African Americans. When he looks at Obama he doesn’t see a president he sees an African American president (actually in Rush’s case he see a “magical negro” president). I guess when he looked at Donovan McNabb he couldn’t get past his skin color.

How anybody gives him a pass is beyond me. We don’t give a pass to skinheads and anti-semites, but he gets a pass?

  39. justlen 28 January 2009 at 1:12 pm #

    AnninCA | 01.28.2009 – 1:09 pm | #

If you can get a loan. I know of some people with FICO scores well above 700 that can’t get a mortgage.

  40. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:12 pm #

Robert Gibbs press briefing coming up. Let’s see if he can answer questions without making jokes.

  41. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:13 pm #

Exactly justlen. Plus who would purchase a home right now anyway with all the layoffs? I don’t know too many folks that feel comfortable about their jobs these days.

  42. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 1:15 pm #

    So turn off the radio.

Rush is just an entertainer type.

I never would in a gazillion years watch any of the current crop of “news” people.

Here’s my own take. From Couric to Rush, they are irrelevant.

I can’t figure out who the real journalists are, but I think they are still out there, trying their best.

    But this bunch of nitwits?

This is the era of journalism that completely mirrors the era of CEOs.

They are shameless and without a shred of integrity.

  43. MyManJeeves 28 January 2009 at 1:16 pm #

    AnninCA

O’Reilly – another guy who seems to have a problem with African Americans. I remember when he went to Sylvia’s, a Harlem restaurant and was shocked when he discovered that African Americans could actually behave in a restauarnt. No hip hop music, etc. He said this on-air and thought it was a compliment. What pieces of garbage these two are, they hate anybody who disagrees with them.

  44. IndyRobin 28 January 2009 at 1:17 pm #

Robert Gibbs press briefing coming up. Let’s see if he can answer questions without making
    jokes.
    kris

Lol … yeah. This too shall pass. I do however, like him so far.

  45. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 1:17 pm #

    justlin…….that’s what I’m hearing.

The credit market is stopped up.

I still don’t understand why this “stimulus” package doesn’t hit that area.

I’m so not sophisticated, but it seems to me, we can’t seem to to hit the mark. The real issue is the housing market and how to put an end to the bottom.

  46. Audiegrl 28 January 2009 at 1:20 pm #

    AnninCA | 01.28.2009 – 1:15 pm | #

If you really don’t believe Rush is anything more than an entertainer. Then you should be careful when quoting him on political stories that he just flat-out lied about. Example, ACORN getting money from the bailout.

  47. justlen 28 January 2009 at 1:20 pm #

    The real
issue is the housing market and how to put an end to the bottom.
    AnninCA | 01.28.2009 – 1:17 pm | #

The banks are sitting on the money. Nothing will happen until the bad debt gets written off. And housing prices aren’t coming back any time soon.

  48. IndyRobin 28 January 2009 at 1:20 pm #

They are shameless and without a shred of integrity.

    AnninCA

Rush and the word “journalist” in the same sentence makes my skin crawl.

  49. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:22 pm #

There is some conversation that Obama is going to create a “bad bank” to take toxic mortgages off the banks books. But this seems to be a vicious circle. The more people are laid off the more foreclosures we are going to have.

It’s going to be a very long time before the housing market recovers.

  50. MyManJeeves 28 January 2009 at 1:22 pm #

Here’s my own take. From Couric to Rush, they are irrelevant.

    Couric and Rush comparable? WTF?

My dad grew up in 20′s and 30′s, when he heard Rush Limbaugh he said it reminded him of Father Coughlin, who used to peddle an anti-semitic, ant-immigrant, xenophobic worldview. Eventually, he became radioactive to the radio station because of loss of advertisers.

  51. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 1:23 pm #

O’Reilly has been very complimentary to Obama. I can’t speak to the rest of your post, to be honest.

I don’t pay real attention to either of these guys. They are just “conservative” entertainers in my mind.

But O’Reilly clearly likes Obama. Rush clearly doen’t.

I guess I figured that’s how they distinguished one another from one another.

I honestly see them as the same as Late Night entertainment, etc.

Both sides have their entertainment outlets.

    They make their political points.

But the real truth of this is?

The audience is really in charge.

If you don’t agree, then you won’t find their shows, whether you’re Jon Stewart or Rush L, remotely interesting.

This is really about people and opinions and that’s why it’s entertainment and not journalism.

    Journalism is dead right now.

There is no such thing right now as objectivity.

    It’s dead.

  52. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:24 pm #

Gibbs is okay. I’ll reserve real judgement for awhile. I just don’t care for the way he doesn’t answer questions and always has some glib remark. It gets a little old.

  53. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:25 pm #

    Here’s Gibbs.

  54. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 1:27 pm #

Just…..they aren’t sitting on the money.

The money is propping up a disastrous loan portfolio.

    You want the truth?

We can all whine about Citibank and BofA and their jets, but when those banks say……

    “We’re bankrupt.”

That is the day that your personal life will absolutely change.

You will have no money. No access to money.

And your family will be looking for the next meal.

This is a depression, in my opinion.

    We’re just pretending it isn’t.

  55. justlen 28 January 2009 at 1:29 pm #

    Ann, that’s not the issue.

None of the banks know what credit default swaps contain good debt or bad debt, so they aren’t lending to each other, much less to business.

I’ll have money, mine’s in a credit union that didn’t participate in CDS.

  56. kris 28 January 2009 at 1:31 pm #

    AnninCa -

    Absolutely one hundred percent wrong.

Gibbs does not communicate well. There have been other press secretarys who were prepared when a new President took office. Gibbs is not clearly.

  68. IndyRobin 28 January 2009 at 2:02 pm #

    kris …

I’m very happy to hear your opinion and glad to have your political insight.

  69. kris 28 January 2009 at 2:02 pm #

And I am sick of the sports analogies. Gibbs does not serve Obama well when we have beer comparisons.

  70. kris 28 January 2009 at 2:04 pm #

Thanks IndyRobin. He just rubs me the wrong way and frankly he did during the campaign. I know he was rewarded by Obama with this job but I think there would be others that could articulate a little better than Gibbs.

Promise to not bring it up again because there are times I can get on a roll about something and not let go. It’s a flaw of mine :-)

  71. IndyRobin 28 January 2009 at 2:10 pm #

I think he communicates well but he is tooooo verbal. I believe despit his competent demeanor,he’s probably scared shitless and nervous, hopefully he will gain more experience
    and stop the sports analogies.

For me, I’m so damn happy the Repugs are gone that I can’t judge appropriately.

  72. IndyRobin 28 January 2009 at 2:12 pm #

  73. AnninCA 28 January 2009 at 2:27 pm #

    Gibbs commiunicates his Boss.

    That’s a given.

    You can criticize his />

but if you honestly think he avoids issues because of HIS ideas, then I have to just come out and say it.

    You are naive.

A press secretary takes his marching orders, daily, from his boss.

    You don’t like his message?

    You’re disagreeing with the president.

Style matters, but not that dang much folks.

    Get real.

    ” I listen to Rush in the car.AnninCA “
No duhhh! The fat, drugaddicted, impotent, draft dodging coward calls HIMSELF a journalist, is that just another of the lies he admits to telling just for the money? Remember when he said after the repugs lost Congress “I no longer have to carry the water for people who’s water I didn’t feel was worth carrying”?
Limpwithnoballs IS the face of the repugnantclan party. A fat, white, sweaty, small minded bigot who gives the bigots out there someone to look up to. Kinda nice to see Lardo has porked up again, makes it more fun to carricature him.
