I’ll start by answering a question we’re getting: have you looked at your new website with your monitor set at 800 x 600? Short answer from my tech whiz is that this resolution is receding from popularity, my words not hers, but the gist of what I picked up.  A portion of the site, including the post itself does fit the screen at that resolution, is easily seen, as is the header. So, we made a decision, but yes we definitely checked that out. No doubt there will be tweaks and additions along the way, so this is just a start.

The post of the day for my money is over at Media Matters, where they take a defense cutting rumor by Robert Kagan apart:

In his February 3 Washington Post column, headlined “No Time To Cut Defense,” Robert Kagan claimed that “Pentagon officials have leaked word that the Office of Management and Budget [OMB] has ordered a 10 percent cut in defense spending for the coming fiscal year, giving Defense Secretary Robert Gates a substantially smaller budget than he requested.” In fact, as Josh Rogin reported in a February 2 Congressional Quarterly article, the Obama administration has actually proposed increasing the Pentagon’s fiscal year 2010 budget by about $14 billion from its 2009 budget. In stating that OMB has “ordered a 10 percent cut,” Kagan was comparing the limit reportedly set by the Obama administration for defense spending with what Rogan reported was “a $584 billion draft budget request compiled last fall by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for fiscal 2010″ — not a budget that Gates “requested,” as Kagan claimed. Indeed, Kagan baselessly suggested a split between OMB and Gates over the increasing size of the budget, writing that President Obama “should side with Gates over the green-eyeshade boys.” But Gates has stated that the “FY 2010 budget must make hard choices” and that the “spigot of defense funding opened by 9/11 is closing.”

I bet the one complaining about 800×600 is a kitty coming to the site via AOL dialup on their 13″ monitor.

It’s the 486 they use to run QuickBooks at the Sip ‘n Go at Exit 53.

800×600?!?!?!? FSMdammit, I want 1280×1024 to be the new minimum and frankly, I wish I could get more than the 1440×900 I do out of my laptop. Toshiba’s new smartphone (rumored) is coming out in 800×480 so you’ll maybe have to do some mobile tweaking for THAT but for most things?!?! Come on people!

    WXGA+!

Latest vote on stimulus in Senate, a procedural vote, failed by 58-39. Snowe and Collins went (R) while Kit Bond (BOND?!?) and Arlen Specter went (D). Ted Kennedy wasn’t present to vote, and of course neither was Gregg.

Bi-partisanship means giving Republicans their way. Completely. When R’s are in power, flood the airways with R’s because they won and they’re right! When D’s are in power, flood the airways because, man, ya gotta have balance and R’s are right!

So Toshiba’s new smartphone is either going to have a 10″ screen or you have 20/5 vision. My iPhone is 320×240 and I can barely make out the pixels.

I only have decent vision but I have it so there. I want high resolution now while I can see it. Do it! Do it now! You (and I, someday) can always get a magnifying glass fercryinoutloud. I think GameBoys had something like that and it clipped over the screen to make everything seem bigger.

And in my defense, I did say the Toshiba phone is rumored and I haven’t SEEN one, in hand, yet, so maybe that is stretching it a bit.

I stand by 1280×1024 for desktop viewing, though. 1440×900 is even better. I finally got fed up with 1280×800 on my older HP laptop so I found a great Dell D630 on eBay (If you’re interested, I can hook ya up) that gets the higher resolution. I seriously looked at System76 machines, but their 12″ and 13.3″ machines top out at 1280×800.

I’m a Mac and Linux guy. My MacBook is running at 1680×1250. At a certain point the resolution doesn’t buy anything. It’s like HDTV. 1080i isn’t going to do anything for you if your screen is smaller than 50″.

When we finally went HDTV I pondered the behmoth over the fireplace but didn’t want to look up to watch. Settled on a 37″ 720p set that fit into the wall shelves nicely and didn’t overwhelm the room.

Our neighbor has the 60″ monster and football certainly looks better but for most day to day stuff I’m happy with the compromise. Besides, with what I saved I upgraded to a Tivo Series 3.

Haven’t run 800×600 for sometime, at least not since my Windows 95 days back in the 90′s. I’ve been all Mac since 2003 and have not looked back. I run both an iMac and MacBook and an iPhone when those aren’t handy. Partner and I are shopping for a new big screen since our “60 started ghosting. I would tell everyone to avoid projection LCD’s as the optical blocks cost almost as much as the TV and need to be replaced every other lamp or so.
