In Honor of Irish

According to my courageous mother, long ago passed, I’ve got quite a bit of Irish blood running through my veins. Irish-Scots mutt is more like it, because we can’t trace it fully for many reasons. But on St. Patrick’s Day I always honor her, our heritage and the stories she told me; most haunting, even dark messages of the challenges living brings and that life is rarely fair. That we lived. The curse of the black Irish, as it were. But life is still grand and worth celebrating, because it’s the journey that makes us who we are.

It’s perhaps this brooding, private nature of those of us blessed with the Irish that inspires us to put such unbridled zest into life’s festivities when they happen.

So on this St. Patrick’s night it is an Irish blessing offered. Down a mug of ale (or your drink of choice), and celebrate tonight… in honor of every moment of life well lived.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you:
May you see your children’s children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

I love that verse, thanks Taylor.

I’ve been doing a ton of genealogy lately.

My kin, on my Father’s side, hail form New Ross, County Wexord. They left before the famine in the 1840′s. To a place at least as inhospitable, and beautiful, as Ireland, Newfoundland. Where you will still hear deep Irish accents being spoken.

  4. kris 17 March 2009 at 6:45 pm #

I love that verse too, but, I am of Germanic descent. I would love to go to Ireland. I have friends that have been there and say it is absolutley gorgous.

We are having corn beef, cabbage and potatoes all in the crock pot and we will eat in about 1/2 hour when our son gets here.
We went to the doctors today. Mine just a regular 6 month check and all is great. Hubby for the pneumonia. His lungs are clear and now it’s just bronchial. Has 4 days left of antibiotics and she gave him another prescription just for good measure.

Today I was listening to Limbaugh on our way home and a lady called in and said she was a liberal. She made the comment to him that she listens to him and has never heard a liberal call on his show. He told her that they call in all the time. And then told her that he put her ahead of 3 other callers. She said she didn’t want special treatment. So he told her he would put her behind those three callers. Just before he took the 3rd call he brought her back up and told her she was next. She said she’d wait. Well, after the 3rd caller, guess what! It was noon and he told her to call back tomorrow. I laughed and said to my husband, he just confirmed what she said to him, the stupid idiot.

Please don’t forget, Taylor – in California we have another (legal and FAR more healthy) choice. ;-)

  23. Lake Lady 17 March 2009 at 9:36 pm #

I’m a mutt too,we have no idea what my Mother’s background was. She was adopted during the time when everything was kept secret. Her adoptive Mom didn’t tell her, a mean cousin did when she was 12.

We always said just judging from her style of mothering…Italian or Jewish.

  24. Lake Lady 17 March 2009 at 9:39 pm #

pmichael….I’m hoping that sometime during his administration Obama will get around to decriminalizing. He would seem to have the correct sensibilities to see the waste in the ‘war on drugs’.

  25. pmichael 17 March 2009 at 9:39 pm #

I guess I’m showing my age here, but we never used the term “mutt”. We proudly called ourselves “Heinz 57“s. *L*

  26. pmichael 17 March 2009 at 9:40 pm #

Lake Lady, the “war on drugs” is a farce.
Making drugs illegal has only one accomplishment – making the drug dealers rich.

  27. pmichael 17 March 2009 at 9:49 pm #

BTW – (I get in trouble for this one) – I feel exactly the same way about prostitution. Every woman should have the right to provide ‘services’ for men – and charge for it – if she should so choose to. If they wish to be a ‘pro’ and our government wants to require certain ‘health tests and requirements’ (as they intelligently do in Nevada) – then so be it.
But to procecute a woman for making a man smile –
    is ridiculous.
    Just my opinion.

  28. pmichael 17 March 2009 at 10:05 pm #

Prostitution is ‘illegal’ because men made the laws — and they were frightened to death women would eventually accumulate every dollar on earth – if they were allowed to ‘charge’ for it.
As one very smart philosopher once stated, “Know thyself”. ;-)

  29. Betsy 17 March 2009 at 10:09 pm #

Nope you are right on both counts pmichael. I have said that prostitution should be legalized. It’s safer that way when there are medical tests etc. like the brothels in NV. And I’ve always said that if booze is legal than so should drugs. That way they can be taxed and the govt has the money. Probably could almost give tax cuts to people because the drug tax would pay for many things. :-)

Well, I, like most people, am a mutt. But one that can claim irish, german, Scotch, French, and American Indian (don’t know the tirbe). But with a surname like Lynch, and daugthers with names of Erin and Siobhan – we all claim Irish.

  31. djjl 17 March 2009 at 10:26 pm #

In fact, my husband brought homw a bottle of Bushmills Irish Whisky today. HE never does that. I asked what was the occasion and he seemed flabbergasted at the question – “St Patrick’s Day obviously” he replied.

Interesting that – today being the day of ‘green’ – more than one person is thinking about spring and planting.
Not a real big deal – but I planted my annual four tomato plants today. Tomorrow I’ll take my Dahlia tubers out of storage and get them going.

  36. pmichael 17 March 2009 at 11:20 pm #

BTW – Betsy, I appreciate your agreement. What really bothers me is the people I feel are ‘intelligent’ that disagree.
    I honestly don’t understand that.

It does, however, give me one more chance to display one of my most famous statements. :-)
If all drugs became ‘legal’ *today* – the average IQ tomorrow would double. ;-)

I like the front of your house, GeoT. If I may make a suggestion — for *total* ‘Fill’ – in a dramatic splash of color – use Coleus. When you get the idea you can snip a branch of it and simply stick it in a hole you created with a pencil – you’ll go nuts with it. ‘Saturn’, “Fishnet Stocking’, and many Pink varieties will make your garden positively ‘psychodelic‘.
