This would be interesting if it wasn’t more of the same. Rumors? um… It’s no rumor that Pres. Obama hasn’t been leading on health care.
But evidently the headline at Huffington Post and the reports from Sam Stein and Ryan Grim piss offed inspired the Obama White House to push back on what is unfolding, evidently not understanding that if they’d actually taken a leadership role from the start, like Obama saying where his veto pen would land and where it wouldn’t, which would have still kept him from writing the bill, the Senate and House wouldn’t be in this predicament in the first place.
However, there has never been any clarity from Obama. A public option can mean any number of things, especially when the senator from the great state of Maine is holding the Democratic President and Democratic majority hostage over a trigger if a public option is included.
If Pres. Obama wants a public option he should also know how he wants it defined. Leading is necessary to make these types of things clear, because it’s the substantive foundation of not only offering more people coverage, but at a better price, which goes beyond the insurance reform and covering pre-existing conditions. But he hasn’t. In fact, he’s done just the opposite in order to keep Sen. Snowe on board who has said a trigger is her line in the sand on the public option.
What’s Obama’s line in the sand?
Who knows? But the White House issuing another non-defined public option statement is worthless.
