A Quote from Last Night

Comes from the Alfalfa Club annual dinner, compliments of Show Me Stater, retiring Sen. Kit Bond.

“Secretary Hillary Clinton wasn’t at the State of the Union because she was in London. Which was a relief to the White House — they were afraid she might have been in Iowa.” – Sen. Kit Bond

I met Mr. Bond decades ago when we shared a float in a state parade (he hit on me), back when I was Miss Mo, which is the best segue around to congratulate Miss Virginia, the Beltway state I call home now, for winning the Miss America contest. It reminds me of a kerfuffle I had with a NOW representative, who picketed the pageant the year I was in it and it was a very grand affair; back when it was still held in New Jersey, along the famous boardwalk. I came out of my hotel one morning, press mobbing me (yes, that was really the scene back then), when this gal came up to me and said: How can you demean yourself like this? In front of a throng of reporters, I simply looked at her and said, “Do you want to pay for my college tuition?” Long before the pageant allowed two-piece swimsuits, girls like me competed for the cash. I couldn’t have gone to college without it.

In another looks competition, the on-air media world, I’ve been noticing for months the gradual weight loss of Candy Crowley, the veteran marathon ever-on-the-road journalist. Well, via Michael Calderon, it turns out she’s getting a Sunday show nod. No doubt there is always inspiration to lose weight, but getting a good TV gig is certainly one of them. Congratulations to Candy.

FYI, Hillary was sent to London as the “designated survivor” in case everybody was wiped out by a “terrorist” at the SOTU speech the other night. Thank God that didn’t happen. Hillary even started trouble during her latest trip by announcing that the United States was sending $6.4 billion dollars in weapons to Taiwan. That really pissed China off who responed with the strongest negative statement to the USA we have seen in decades. To top it off brain dead State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said “Our action regarding Taiwan reinforces our commitment to stability in the region.” What utter crap. How does the USA stabilize any region by selling it billions of dollars in weapons? Especially to Taiwan which is a very sensative area for China. Our foreign policy is badly out of control and Hillary is the root cause of the mess. Peace

You’re gonna get on my bad side sniping such nonsense about Sec/State Clinton, Imhotep. :-) She is one of the best public servants around; she doesn’t deserve the crap people dish up about her. Foreign policy is not dictated by the State Department, and Hillary Clinton is most certainly NOT the root cause of “the mess.”

Candy Crowley is one of the smartest and most experienced political journalists around, I’m so glad she’s getting her own show. She can offer insights and context that no others can. Just as an aside, I can’t remember where I heard this, but about a year ago, heard that Candy Crowley is Wolf Blitzer’s sister-in-law; strikes me that it was actually revealed during an interview between Blitzer and Crowley on air, but I could be wrong.

Sen. Bond’s comment was funny! :-)

Congrats to Miss Virginia; shame on that NOW member.

imhopless what an incredibly sour, depressing world you live in, if you can call the conspiracy riddled existence you apparently lead living.

I’ve always if not liked C Crowley didn’t find her utterly useless ass a reporter or on air talking head. I always figured her weight hurt her as she was CERTAINLY more competent then some of the OTHER talking heads.
Frankly I much prefer the BBC approach where they are just news readers and not “personalities”.

The right-wing pushing the meme of Hillary 2012. All on the radio the other day, must be a slow news cycle. All fueled by the fact she doesn’t see herself serving two terms, which is not uncommon. The obsession with her never stops. As for Candy I couldn’t think of a better person deserving of their own show.

Noogan, you can’t have it both ways. Either Obama is an incompetent dunce and non-leader who pays no attention to what is going on around him or he is not. Either he is deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the things that his administration is doing and saying or he is too uninvolved, blase and some “n” word, to give a damn. Which is it? Peace

When Bond was Governor of Missouri he had a beer tap run from somewhere in the bowls of the state house to his bathroom! He was known for going to a certain Jefferson City bar after closing hours and keeping the band to play for him and his crowd, which included lots of available women, early into the morning. Of course he was much younger then. Now he has been through a divorce,a bankruptcy and he appears to be dried out ….or… maybe not.

Speaking of women in the media,Barbara Walters hosted ‘This Week’ today and she was very enjoyable. She even got old crusty Roger Alles to be somewhat civil.

It’s hilarious that republicans are still obsessed with Hillary, that’s for sure.

You know that Scott Brown helped pay for law school with his money from the Cosmo spread, don’t you?

    Kind of the same thing…

Well, yes, CC is losing weight–but she’s still old! What’s next, a face lift?

I don’t fault TM for being in a pageant, or Scott B. for posing nude. But do we nave to evaluate news commentators on their looks? It’s fine to lose weight, and to comment on it–but I see it is paired with a Sunday show. Frankly, I find David Gregory hard to look at, but that’s not a major fault of his–he has many others.

I didn’t evaluate Crowley on her looks, as she’s a first rate journalist. But it’s an absolute fact of life for on-air talent re: looks. I noticed her weight change through her on-air interviews, and I was truly happy for her, even if it did signal to me she was going to get a show. The benefits on the health side made me ecstatic.

As I said in the post, it’s one of the things that was good about the interview, that he admitted he has “no regrets.” Though as a point of fact, a one-piece swimsuit, with heels(!), isn’t like posing nude. Just sayin’.
