‘Mad as Hell’ Oscar Weekend

It’s Oscar weekend and everyone could use some relaxation.

TCM has been doing great programming as this weekend approaches, with Robert Osborne doing a spectacular interview with Lauren Bacall last night.

Seriously, what would we do without the movies?

…especially with Obama and the Democrats flailing around like they lost the 2008 election and are in the minority!

For a laugh, it turns out Romney got beat by Sarah Palin in the late night ratings. Most around here are not surprised.

Consider this a topic free for all. Politics, but especially recipes for Oscar Sunday, are encouraged. The floor is yours.

    Okay secular…we are waiting…….?

I’m fresh out of cooking ideas. I’ll have some soon because I am going to start looking for good recipes to copy and give out at the Market.I will start with spring greens and salad dressings. I have a new vender who is the sole importer for a small olive farm in Greece he says their oil is to die for.

Obama and Bill Clinton have thrown their support behind Blanche Lincoln. There you have it folks. Two of the most powerful CONSERVATIVES in the Democratic Party are backing CONSERVATIVE Blanche Lincoln for reelection. I’ll be supporting her challenger, Progressive Bill Halter. Now for the Oscar’s. The finest actors in America today are working in Washington, D.C. and not in Los Angeles, California. So whoever wins the Golden Statue is a second banana. Peace

Curious Imhotep, are you in Arkansas? Or are you supporting from afar – like I do sometimes too?
    Just looking for neighbors.

Disappointed, but not surprised that Clinton supported Lincoln = he talked her into running for the House in 1992. He is loyal to a fault imo. Lincoln – though I don’t like it – is representing the opinions of her district. In my opinion – their opinion is not in their interests – mine is supposedly the typical liberal stance.

If you’re not watching – Rachel claims she got some ‘goodies’ on Stupak (who’s paying his rent)

I saw that segment, too. She said Stupak only pays $600/month rent on his C Street apartment (supposedly he moved out in December), the rest which is subsidized to the tune of approx. $1000? per month or so by the religious group “The Family”. However, none of the subsidized amount has been reported to the IRS. So he could be in trouble for that. Something to that effect.

Remember, Al Capone wasn’t sent away for murder, or rum running. He was busted for TAX EVASION.

Since Lake Lady asks about salad dressing here’s something to try

    - mix about 2 parts good red wine vinegar (Italian not US – acid content needs to be at least 6% – 7% is better, the US stuff if 5% and is water) to 1 part EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) plus a reasonable amount of sea salt or if you are lazy like me use “Crazy mixed up salt”.

    - once the salt is dissolved and you have a good suspension resist all urges to drink the stuff right then and there – just soak a salad with it and enjoy.

Variation – this can be a base to work from – you can add whatever dry or fresh herbs turns your crank.

I like this dressing on a nice spring salad with a good ribeye steak. A simple and fast meal for the Oscars.

For those who don’t fear the cardiac surgeon and know that bacon fat is a gift from the gods do what my beloved grand Aunt Julia used to do -

Take some fresh, young mustard greens then wash and dry them. Lightly top with hot sizzling bacon drippings (don’t hesitate to include the little crunchy bacon pieces from the pan) and lightly dust with large crystal sea salt. Enjoy! Don’t plan of being tested for sodium or saturated fats anytime soon, Trust me its better that you don’t know.

Yummy. We’re cranking up the barbecue tomorrow, as it appears it may crack 60 degrees! Steaks… mmmmmmmmmmm.

Thanks mwfolsom~ I will make sure it is Italian wine. Mmmmm…wilted salad! Haven’t had that in forever but I remember how good it is…:)

Lake Lady – the second salad is very, very southern, I remember it from Aunt Julia’s house outside of Birmingham Alabama. The first springs from a botled salad dressing I used to get at A&P Grocery stories. Once I left the South I was forced to improvise and recreate it. From there I made a discovery here in New Mexico. Why red wine vinegar with 7% acetic acid is soooo much better than the stuff with 5% acetic acid is really beyond me but it is -

Meanwhile I’m off to Nelson (my favorite Hispanic meat market here in Abq) for some ribeye’s and maybe I’ll drop by Lumpy’s for a green chili cheeseburger and fresh made fries for a snack.

I loved that interview with Lauren Bacall. I love Lauren Bacall, period! She is wonderful to listen to since she lived along with so many of my favorite actors (Cary Grant, Bogart, etc).

If I could only have one cable channel, it would be TCM. Nothing else is even close.
