“He’s going to be a one term president,” the Costco book browser said to his friend. That’s what I overheard yesterday, as two thirtysomething guys perused the political books. There’s no evidence it’s that dire right now. Obama’s got a lot of time to turn it around. But polling continues to head negative for the President.
This is what Democrats are feeling as they ponder reconciliation on health care. As Harry Reid found out when Obama came to Nevada, the President isn’t exactly helping Democrats right now. From Public Policy Polling:
Barack Obama now has a negative approval rating in every state he flipped from the Bush column to his in 2008.
State by state, just imagine what Democrats in Congress are feeling. Below are the approval/disapproval ratings from PPP:
-In Colorado a recent Rasmussen poll found his approval at 45/53. Research 2000 found his favorability at 46/47 in January.
-In Florida Rasmussen found his approval at 45/54 and Quinnipiac’s latest found it at 45/49.
-In Indiana Rasmussen has his approval at 44/54 and Research 2000 finds his favorability at 46/49.
-In Iowa Rasmussen has him at 45/54, and the latest Des Moines Register poll put his approval at 46%, though I can’t find the disapproval number anywhere.
-In Nevada Rasmussen finds his approval at 46/54. We found 44/52 in in January.
-In New Mexico we found his approval last week at 45/48.
-In North Carolina our last poll put him at 45/51.
-In Ohio Quinnipiac’s last poll put him at 44/52.
-In Virginia Rasmussen’s latest has him a 48/51. SurveyUSA last had him at 44/54, and we put him at 42/52.
Pres. Obama remains a likable personality, but it has not translated to the voters in he understands my plight and can solve my problems. Luckily for Obama, after the midterms he gets a new push. Except that it’s about that time Republicans will come calling for 2012. However, the midterms worked to reset things for WJC, who went on to easily win in 1996. However, as I’ve said before, the dynamics are not the same at all and the Republicans won’t feel about their 2012 candidate, whoever he (or she) is, the way they felt about Bob Dole.

After the mid-terms, even with a “new push,” I’m thinking Obama will be even further behind.
As you have discussed, the lack of leadership from the Dems in general is astounding, though that’s my descriptive word, not yours
.
I’m with Joyce. I think he’ll be even further behind simply because he didn’t use the first year correctly.
Both Bill Clinton and G.W. Bush managed to be re-elected. I wouldn’t put anything past this dumbed-down electorate. They’ll believe anything. They think there’s no “global warming” because DC got record snow.

I agree. They might even be stupid enough to vote for Obama twice.
It’s getting REAL close to the time where I score a winning lottery ticket and go watch America’s excuse for polotics from afar as comedy.

I won’t be surprised if Obama wins a second term, even if he does start further behind because of his own leadership choices. But there are still many choices to be made, by him and the Dems, and by the Repubs, so who knows.
I think the Republicans knew there was no way one of their party was going to win the WH, or the majority,in 2008, and McCain filled that role. This next time around, it may very well not be a Dole or a McCain, but someone who will excite and energize with the kind of “I understand your plight” Taylor mentions.
Obama’s numbers will continue to slide until people stop losing their jobs and their homes.
Jobs. Homes. Jobs. Homes. Jobs. Homes.
This is such a non-story. Pass a health care bill—-any health care bill—-put a few million people back to work, close Guantanamo, try KSM in New York, let the Patriot Act expire in a year, get every last soldier out of Iraq by December 2011, and end the war in Afghanistan by June 2012 and Obama will win the election in a landslide that November. Every one of things can be accomplished. As for this November’s election—-who gives a s**t who wins and who loses? They’re all a bunch of thieves who have been bought and paid for by the corporations anyway. Peace
Imotep,
If the GOP takes over in November it’s pretty much the end of Obama. They are going to investigate everything in Chicago til the cows come home and Obama doesn’t have the fight in him that Bill Clinton did to withstand it. Trying to pass a crap bill any bill is what has gotten Obama started on this downhill slide. He’s not really interested in putting people back to work.
Nothing to investigate. Obama is as pure as the driven snow. Besides all those ‘new’ people in Congress won’t even be able to find their offices for 18 months. Peace
It makes a difference Imhotep, our worst congressperson is better than their best if they intend to allow the Tea Party to sing the tune.It matters who chairs the committees and sets the agenda. Even if the Dems are getting nothing done they still serve to block the Republican agenda.
That agenda is the dismantlement of all of the social safety net and disenfranchising as much of the electorate as they can.
Unfortunately in a Democracy you get the Government you deserve.
I am not pleased with either party in washington right now. I voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary. I voted for Obama in the general election, but I didn’t donate or put out a yard sign like I did for Hillary Clinton, but I thought that Obama would at least pass a good health care bill, toss out don’t ask, don’t tell, get the country back on track for jobs and cut spending and fix the education system in this country. I have been very disappointed so far and continue to be so far and its not looking like I will change my mind anytime soon. I might be for once in my life be voting for a republican or independent in the 2012 election and I never thought I say that.
Palin did and so can The President. Let go, and let Joe.
‘board ! Leaving on track 9, destination unknown.
Imotep,
Are you serious? Obama has had some shady dealings but even if he didn’t it wouldnt matter. The GOP can make stuff up to investigate. Right now they are in the minority and they are controlling the agenda. Can you imagine what will happen if they are in the majority.
Ga6thDem, 1st of all I doubt that the Republicans have the steam to take control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives this November. 2ndly, if they do their margin will be far short of that needed to uphold a presidential veto. 3rdly, given the mood of the country if the Republicans bring both the Senate and the House to a standstill by endlessly investigating Obama, he will be reelected and they will be voted out of office in 2012. Obama was born under a “lucky star” and its best never to fight agaisnt destiny. It only makes “destinies child” stronger and his or her foes look ridiculous. Peace
Part of me wonders if we will even notice if they take control in nov. The wars are still going on, the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act has been renewed, and we are still spying on Americans.
Call me a pessimist Firebagger, but I can’t help feel demoralized at the Democratic Party’s lack of enthusiasm for the Democratic Platform. If we don’t believe in our own ideals and are busy pretending to be Republicans with a fetish for the flyover states, what is the fucking point of even being the opposition? Why don’t we all band together with the refucklicans and teabaggers and form the Corporatist Authoritarian Warmongers Party of America. It’s a big tent, y’all.
I think Obama long decided sometime after his November 2008 win to be only a one termer. The man has stated repeatedly that he would be happy to just serve “one term”. He could already have a job lined up right after leaving office making millions. It is rumored he has a huge financial offer lined up after he completes his first term. The pay out for the deal is said to be in the millions…with that kind of money Mr. Obama and Mrs. Obama will be set for life.
So, yeah President Obama has big post presidency plans.
Marie,
He said he would rather serve one term and get healthcare reform passed than serve two terms and abandon it.
Look, he pisses me off too, but we don’t need to start lying and taking his statements out of context for our various conspiracy theories.
The fact is that all elected officials make damn good money after serving, whether it be writing, lobbying, or public speaking (or perhaps all three if they are really good).
He may be a one term president. He sure seems to be allowing the opposition the opportunity to make sure he is so maybe he is over it. But it is unfortunate because this was what I think was our last chance to make some progressive changes in this country. I think once the Death Party gets back in, they will make this country the third world wasteland they have always wanted – a place where only the “real” Americans have access to privilege or even opportunity. We have seen the last of the American ideal most of us grew up thinking was immutable. Say goodbye to that and say hello to a the New Improved America that will likely resemble a hybrid of the America envisioned in books “The Handmaids Tale” and “Jennifer Government”: A wingnutty authoritiarian semi-theocratic state that will be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Corporatocracy.
One thing for sure, brown folks and women won’t be invited to the party (except as servants and broodmares, respectively).
Imotep,
Are you serious? What part of Obama does not have the fight do you not understand? Obama born under a lucky star? Really now? Why was his first year so disastrous then? It should have been good if your conspiracy theories are right.
