How does this happen?
That 1979 feeling is getting more intense, just ask Independents.
The President asks to address a joint session of Congress on GOP 2012 debate day at the Reagan library, but instead of accepting and using the speech against the Obama during the debate, Speaker Boehner makes history by refusing Pres. Obama, who then has to reschedule his speech.
Mr. Obama’s infamous multi-dimensional chess is not only missing a strategy, he’s been faked out of his board. The most embarrassing aspect is that the White House set this up.

Word! the WH is run by fucking idiots! Jesus. PPP’s poll has some jaw droppers- will have have the highlights at noon here. A ight were words do fail- not even his defends are able to defend. Jennifer Granholm on fb was speechless on WH’s move. Damn
Ezra Klein is right: Obama should have just had his speech in another location more evocative, same date and time as the GOP debate . Instead of jumping at what Boehner wanted O should have set up a speech primetime in Pittsburgh with the unemployed. How about that for optics? And for a real politcal win? Words fail.
I’ve been speechless about Obama for over three years….lol
tweet of the night from Markos- who is getting savaged for criticizing obama’s latest fail:
@markos
Markos Moulitsas
I hope Boehner doesn’t ask Obama for his lunch money. The president would go hungry that day.
This is a totally self inflicted wound. Hopefully whoever in the White House thought up this bright idea has already cleaned out his/her desk.
Whatever he suggests will never get enacted, but he has now lost whatever high ground he had to try to sell the voters on the fact that it is just obstructionism by Republicans.
What a bunch of children we have governing this country…and they earn a pretty handsome salary while playing in their sandbox.
Knowing the Obama administration whoever suggested this bright idea will get a raise, instead of being fired. I don’t understand why they didn’t keep the same date but hold it at a different location. There is something mentally wrong with the Obama administration. He has now further empowered the Republican House and made them look stronger. I hate how America is stuck with this moron as President for at least another four years.
Uh…Marie, may I correct you on this? Stuck for another 1 1/2 years.
I’m a Democrat; fuck me gently with a chainsaw, please.
In your first post about this, Taylor, I said something like not knowing if it’s possible for Obama to reach a point so low that Perry or Bachmann could win, but observed that he appears to be giving it a good try. It took all of a few hours for him to “try” again.
After the initial story, and before this headlining Obama decision, barackobama.com sent out an email that included this:
“I’m putting forward a set of bipartisan proposals to help grow the economy and create jobs …
I’m asking lawmakers to look past short-term politics and take action on that plan. But we’ve got to do this together.”
A short time later, Obama once again illustrates his definition of “bipartisan” as well as how he’s willing to “look past short-term politics” by once again, a very publicly, caving. Along with the original decision to schedule at the same time the Rep wannabe’s were debating, this seems to argue that he’s really working at getting a Perry or Bachmann elected.
Our president set this up himself to prove to the world: Barack Obama=Irrelevant
Humilitatiion aside, this is a benefit to Mr. Obama. The debate will provide reams of material against which he can contrast his proposals. Sadly, he will only be showcasing the same proposals that he’s offered before and will fail to seize the moment, but the opportunity is there.
Personally I didn’t give a damn about another speech which will be the same old crap. Tired of speech’s because in the end its his actions that count. No one here is surprised by Capt. Caveman, Rush talks to Bohner, Bohner tells Obama no, Obama says “Thank you sir may I have another”. Still the same old bipartisan crap he will be saying again. The loyalists will continue to defend, even though they don’t have much more to defend. Fighting is just not in his makeup, oops I forgot, he likes to beat up the base. My bad!!!! His support even among African Americans is starting to erode. Do you know how f’d-up you have to be to lose that support. Seriously!!!! I am starting to believe with a half decent liberal, his a$$ could lose the nomination. Just a thought.
TM,
Like JA, I commented on this in your first post yesterday, so I’ll try not to repat myself.
How does this happen-? simple, The Pres has let this happen and he has been assisted by the Dems in DC.
Here is what I mean-Paul Krugman made the statement several weeks /months(?) ago that The Reuplican Party and the right wing do not recognize the legitimacy of a Democratic President. Their actions started with WJC and have intensified under Pres Obama (and for full honesty you have to add the racial element to this simply by listening to the comments of Rush, Beck and fringe Repub Party memebrs of all levels of gov’t).
What Pres Obama has not done, but which WJC did do, was fight back. Pres Obam never fights ,he accomodates, he is confrontation averse. As such Repubs keep “winning” on policy. The Dems in congress don’t fight back either, for fear of appearing to confrontational and not wanting to risk losing the”middle” or whatever other motivations. If your The Repubs you keep up your tactics and strategy of diminishing the Pres and Dems because it is working. Your getting everything you want in just about every negotiation.
Until the Pres and Dems hold their ground and really fight back-the way Howard Dean did as head of the DNC, we can expect more of these incidents and they will intensify as we get closer to the election as Repubs really start smelling blood in the water.
The President is going to have to start landing some punches even if loses a few of the battles. The public needs to start seeing him fight for the middle class and start going after the elites. One way to start is stop saying”Congress” needs to act: and start saying “Republicans are being obstructionist”. So long as he lumps Dems in with “Congress” as the obstacle the Dems are viewed as part of the problem. he has to clearly identify his opponent/enemy.
The Dems in Congress unless they start fighting back strongly and are viewed as fighters for the little guy again, they are toast in 2012. They need to do this even if the Pres doesn’t and even if it goes against the President and his rightward leanings.
As I said in yesterdays post , the Repubs can win the Presidency dispite the crazy on their side because Pres Obama will play a major role in losing it to them.
