The Things Newt Says

A classic Newt bomb:

“I believe that the Jewish people have the right to have a state,” Gingrich said in the interview. “Remember, there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs, who are historically part of the Arab community.”

Oh, but not to worry. He still supports a Palestinian state.

And this stupid ass monkey was a HISTORY Prof?!!!!!!!!

    • Cujo359 10 December 2011 at 8:02 pm #

Must have been. He clearly knows nothing about anthropology.

    • spincitysd 10 December 2011 at 10:40 pm #

Yes Secular, Gingrich was a History Prof, and now we know why he never earned tenure. The stupid, it burns!

      More on this later.

So why don’t you give us the history lesson?  What is your understanding of the history?  And what precisely do you disagree with and what are your citations to support your point of view?

        • JozefAL 11 December 2011 at 2:31 am #

FWIW, the very name “Palestine” is presumed to be related to the far older name “Philistia” (the land of the Philistines).  The name as it currently exists derives from the Greek and Latin names (Palaistine/Palaestina) and it was used to refer to the territory under the British Mandate.

Had the area been left as the original post-Ottoman Arab independence movements intended, all the areas that we now know as Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Jordan would’ve been part of an enlarged Syria (the way that Lawrence had envisioned the post-Ottoman Arab world was that everything east of the Suez Canal, west of Persia/Iran and south of Turkey would’ve been a unified Arab nation; unfortunately, French and British colonial ambitions took precedence over Arab nationalism).   You’re certainly welcome to argue the matter but it won’t change the fact that Newt is COMPLETELY in the wrong on this issue (hell, even the Israeli government is ticked off with Newt’s declaration–official Israeli policy is for a TWO-STATE solution, featuring an independent Israel and an independent Palestine, the latter of which would be very difficult to achieve if there’s no “Palestinian people”).

Patience Padawan-Learner; These things take time.

But not as stupid as your comment….since even Ron Paul admitted it was a true statement.  Where do you go for informaiton that you are incapable of believing what is factual?  Ideology controls your ability to think coherently, let alone your ability to respond factually.  Sad.

      • JozefAL 11 December 2011 at 2:40 am #

So, just because Ron Paul agrees with Newt, the statement must be right?  Well, that’s all I need to know.  Clearly Paul is very well-educated in international foreign policy with a specialty in Middle Eastern history because a college biology major who goes on the become a physician, later specializing in OB/GYN before going to Congress is really someone that we should all pay heed to.

For the record, Paul’s wrong.  Just because you’re obviously a fan doesn’t mean you should be blind when he says stupid shit.

Looks like Newt conveniently forgot that the founders of the state of Israel were a bunch of terrorists who then modeled their new country on a socialist ideal.  Oh I forgot,  as long as their allies it really doesn’t matter.

    • klassicheart 11 December 2011 at 1:37 am #

That’s not a response to the statement of non existent peoplehood.  Why are the Palestinians not Arabs as stated?  What factual statements made by Newt are incorrect in your opinion?  And be specific with references please.

    • klassicheart 11 December 2011 at 1:45 am #

And learn some grammar and spelling while you’re at it….”their” in the context of your use is spelled ” they’re.”  Perhaps if you would take the time to consult a dictionary, you would express yourself more appropriately.  Clearly you need to improve yourself before you throw bombastic words at others.

  3. JozefAL 11 December 2011 at 2:14 am #

@klassicheart:  Perhaps YOU need to do some reading of REAL history–not that shit that you’re obviously getting from FoxNoise.

The simple fact is, that before 1948, there was NO “Israeli” people.  Go ahead.  Try to find ANY reference to an “Israeli” people.  It doesn’t even exist in the Bible (Old OR New Testament).  They were either the Hebrews or the Jews.  So, using Gingrich’s own terms, the “Israelis” are an “invented people.”  (I’m also not seeing where it was fangio’s responsibility to answer directly to what Newt said.  If you think that, you seriously need to take a lesson about internet interaction.  fangio is well within his rights as a visitor to Taylor’s blog–as are you–to make any comment that is tangentially related to the topic at hand.)

Additionally, “Americans” are an “invented people.”  Before 1776, the people of the US were “colonials” (and, even beyond that, they were colonials of their respective colonies–Georgians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, etc).  Virtually EVERY resident of a country is essentially an “invented people.”

Oh, and your need to set yourself up as the TM Grammar Nazi?  Coming from a moron who spells “klassicheart” as one word and with a “k” shows that you’re in need of a bit of spelling help as well.

    Buckle up Marshians, Part One:

This is an old talking point [ no such thing as Palestinians] and it is one of the bigger fatter lies put out by the Likudniks in and out of Israel. It is the rationalization for the Idea of “Greater Israel,” the notion that Jewish state should encompass the entire portion of the former British Mandate of Palestine. It is a proposition that the theft of the West Bank and the Golan Heights is not theft at all since no “real” people are being disadvantaged. It is also a neat way to deny that the Nekba ever happened.

You can really take the measure of Newt by this statement. The overcompensated historian for Fannie Mae threw raw meat to the Greater Israel crowd in a cynical move to garner votes.

Part Two is where we look at the history and all those inconvenient facts that get in the way of both the Israeli and Palestinian narrative.

“I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs, and who were historically part of the Arab community” Newt Gingrich.

Oh my stars and garters, how can a self-described history professor get this so wrong? Outside the deluded musings of the ultra bigot and ultra Likudnik Avigdor Lieberman, no one with any intelligence would unleash such nonsense on an unwary public. What Newt spewed out was not history, it was propaganda, and bad propaganda at that. The Palestinians are a people, they exist, they have a history, and they have a national myth. It’s long story that begins in a dead and gone empire. Settle in gentle reader, this is going to take a while.

Just another example of how the current  repugantklaner/teabagging/santorumlicling party is operating in a bizzaro universe where up is down and lies are fact.
