Romney: ‘I’m not going to eat Barack Obama’s Dog Food

**UPDATED**

The problem, said the former Arkansas governor and 2008 Iowa caucus winner, is that Perry’s Saturday kickoff in South Carolina shows disrespect to the Iowa process. “It’s a tactical blunder … The people of Iowa work very hard to make the straw poll the biggest political moment in the summer,” Huckabee said. – Mike Huckabee: Rick Perry timing ‘bad form,’ ‘tactical blunder’

…and they’re off.

Bachmann one, Romney zip. …somebody obviously told him “people” liked the Mitt on the soap box.

Pawlenty enters a challenge that if you can find any plan from Obama, I’ll come cook you dinner or do your lawn, though it’s limited to 1 acre for Mitt Romney.

This is just weird.

…and Bret Baier, well, words escape me.

UPDATE: Okay, so Newt was on his game, plenty of make-up and might have even lost a couple of pounds. Tim Pawlenty is on the mat; that fit of his with Bachmann was brutal. Bachmann gave another strong debate performance, which should make her team fell good. Byron York’s question about being subservient was a doozy, but there were quite a few low blow questions. As for Mitt Romney, I hope Mr. Perry took a long, hard look, because he’s not going to walk away with the nomination if slick Mitt has anything to say about it. This guy wants this and he’s not going to go quietly. Jon Huntsman isn’t a Republican by today’s standards. Biggest loser: Bret Baier, who was way out of his league.

Romney Raised Taxes to Get S&P to React

(…and other disingenuous moves by Republicans meant to fake out the people)

As Republican presidential hopefuls descended on Iowa for their second major debate on Thursday in Ames, the return of Mr. Romney came at a turning point in his candidacy. His wait-and-see approach toward campaigning in Iowa has been complicated by the expected candidacy of Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, whose strategy includes waging a full effort in the caucuses early next year that open the nominating battles ahead. – With Return to Iowa, Romney Heeds Call of G.O.P. Strategists

We’re headed into some busy Republican 2012 days of action, with Iowa the focus and no one wants to be left out, because even though the White House is preparing to run against Romney, anything can still happen.

What you’ve got to understand about Republicans as they make their case is how they lie to the working class, and have been doing so for decades, in order to convince people to vote against their interests, while utilizing Democratic ideas themselves when it suits them. Sam Stein reveals Michele Bachmann’s hypocrisy on this score today.

A Freedom of Information Act request filed by The Huffington Post with three separate federal agencies reveals that on at least 16 separate occasions, Bachmann petitioned the federal government for direct financial help or aid. A large chunk of those requests were for funds set aside through President Obama’s stimulus program, which Bachmann once labeled “fantasy economics.” Bachmann made two more of those requests to the Environmental Protection Agency, an institution that she has suggested she would eliminate if she were in the White House. Taken as a whole, the letters underscore what Bachmann’s critics describe as a glaring distance between her campaign oratory and her actual conduct as a lawmaker.

But Bachmann’s just a sideshow, though she looks a lot better than Sarah Palin these days, who is once again yanking the chain of her adoring fans. Ames may be overblown in importance, but Sarah isn’t going to let the circus pass her by (after all she needs her Fox contract).

Ronald Reagan could relate to what Mitt Romney did as governor of Massachusetts to impress S&P. Of course, like Romney, Reagan would have a lot of trouble winning the Republican nomination today, too. From Politico:

“When I was governor, S&P rewarded Massachusetts with a credit rating upgrade for our sound fiscal management and the underlying strength of our economy,” Romney boasted. “That didn’t happen by accident. The president’s failure to put the nation’s fiscal and economic house in order has caused a massive loss of confidence that resulted in an embarrassing downgrade.”

But Romney’s case to S&P is a far cry from the anti-tax absolutism of the Republican Party he hopes to lead. Indeed, it bears a far closer resemblance to the right-of-center grand compromise rejected by House Republicans this year — dismissed because it would include new taxes and end tax breaks President Barack Obama described as “loopholes” — or the more modest compromise that passed, than to the Cut, Cap, and Balance plan Romney “applauded.”

The presentation to the ratings agency reveals that Romney’s administration made the case to Standard & Poor’s that his state was creditworthy because of both spending cuts — the current preferred GOP method — and new revenues, including fees he imposed and tax “loopholes” he closed. The presentation also prominently cited a controversial set of tax increases in the summer of 2002, which Romney, then a candidate, had opposed.

This is sound fiscal policy compared to what we’re hearing from all other Republicans. The Tea Party hates Romney already, so this isn’t going to make them feel any cozier toward him.

What’s at the bottom of Romney and Bachmann’s hypocrisy is shared by most of their colleagues, though they won’t admit it, because they’ve tied themselves to a false premise and for whatever stupidity they’re going to allow everyone else to pay for it.

It’s why if Pres. Obama and the White House has any game left they’d take Steve Benen’s advice, which has also mentioned by Chris Matthews.

Here’s the pitch: have the White House take the several hundred letters GOP lawmakers have sent to the executive branch since 2009, asking for public investments, and let President Obama announce he’ll gladly fund all of the Republicans’ requests that have not yet been filled.

This is perfect for Pres. Obama: he gets to give Republicans money for jobs programs that make them look good, with the threat of exposing them if they don’t ascent to creating jobs. It would also make the progressive case the best way possible and manifest what’s needed a lot more than anything else right now: economic growth through jobs.

There is no more important act needed today.

There are innumerable ways for Democrats and progressives to beat Republicans up on their risky economic schemes, but Benen’s is the best I’ve heard so far. However, it takes action to actually do something, not just give meaningless speeches.

Scorched Earth is Nothing New for Obama

It’s panic at 1600. The daily Gallup is depressing by itself, but amidst the economic carnage and America losing our AAA status under Obama’s watch, which will make for a snappy negative GOP ad, everyone is girding their loins for the battle.

But really, folks, have people forgotten Alice Palmer? Remember Obama hinting Hillary was “Bush-Cheney lite”? ..and who can forget that South Carolina memo? If it takes scorched earth that’s what Obama will deliver, because he’s done it many times before.

Did people really believe Obama could get by this time on hope and change, the sequel?

I can’t believe people are shocked by the latest news, which comes in a politically titillating article at Politico:

In a move that will make some Democrats shudder, Obama’s high command has even studied former President George W. Bush’s 2004 takedown of Sen. John Kerry, a senior campaign adviser told POLITICO, for clues on how a president with middling approval ratings can defeat a challenger.

“Unless things change and Obama can run on accomplishments, he will have to kill Romney,” said a prominent Democratic strategist aligned with the White House.

The onslaught would have two aspects. The first is personal: Obama’s reelection campaign will portray the public Romney as inauthentic, unprincipled and, in a word used repeatedly by Obama’s advisers in about a dozen interviews, “weird.”

[...] The second aspect of the campaign to define Romney is his record as CEO of Bain Capital, a venture capital firm that was responsible for both creating and eliminating jobs. Obama officials intend to frame Romney as the very picture of greed in the great recession — a sort of political Gordon Gekko.

I’ve always believed that Obama would have to go hard and go dirty, whether the GOP nominee is Mitt Romney or some other guy. Romney, however, is their worst nightmare, even give his innumerable flaws. The only difficulty for Obama would be if a woman rose to the top, which isn’t going to happen now that Rick Perry and his maleness is in the on-deck circle.

Let’s also not kid ourselves that Obama and Romney are all that different. Neither are ideologues. Both believe in nothing but their own fortunes and futures. Either would sell their soul to make a deal that makes them look good. And both are willing to do anything to get to live in the White House. They’re craven egotists who believe in their own persona and the preciousness of their own man self.

As an insider Dem told me months and months ago, Obama’s never run against a competent Republican, so Mitt Romney scares the crap out of them. But now that people have seen Barack Obama in action, revealing he isn’t all his marketing says he was (as I warned), well, they’re up against it now, because the old Axelrod-Plouffe bs won’t fly this time.

Besides the fact that the entire Politico piece is a gift to Mitt Romney and assumes he’s the nominee, let’s just accept that in 2012 these two unprincipled political chameleons, no insult meant to chameleons, are perfect for the times. Maybe we’ll all get lucky and they’ll tear themselves apart, making way for something novel in 2016: an independent progressive candidate who actually stands for something, but more importantly, is willing to go down fighting for it.

Cheap Shot, But It’s Not Sexist

Michele Bachmann’s intensity is galvanizing voters in Iowa right now and Newsweek’s cover captures that. – Tina Brown

Female bloggers on the Right are pissed. Interesting that Elizabeth Flock from the Washington Post doesn’t even realize ignores that the picture of Palin in shorts came from Jon Meacham, via Runner’s World, though she does write it was before Tina’s time. She uses the Palin photo as an example of how differently she was covered than Bachmann.

Lois Romano’s piece in Newsweek about Michele Bachmann’s presidential run is not nearly as bad as this editorial cover. I felt like I was back watching “Sex and the City,” the episode where Carrie Bradshaw was on the cover of a magazine looking dreadful, because she didn’t show up on time for the photo shoot.

The title of Romano’s piece is even complimentary: Bachmann: Tea Party Queen – Why Michele Bachmann is riding high going into Iowa.

It’s a bad photo, but sexist? Hardly. As Politico reports, Mrs. Bachmann sat for the photo with Chris Buck, who’s also done George McGovern in a Speedo.

At Bachmann’s level, you never trust a photographer you don’t know, not ever.

Should Ms. Brown have run with it? That’s another question. But as her tweet reveals above, she was going for an editorial statement about Bachmann’s “intensity.” Its’ not like Newsweek readers don’t think of Bachmann as a bit wild-eyed.

Who knows, it might even give her a boost in Iowa with her fans who’ll sympathize with her against the lamestream media.

Dyncorp, Sex Trafficking, the UN and ‘The Whistleblower’

The movie debuts this weekend, with “Morning Joe” and Jon Stewart among those helping get the word out. The buzz has been huge.

Kathryn Bolkovac is still fighting to get the U.N. to do something about what she proved. The story goes like this, from 2001

A former United Nations police officer is suing a British security firm over claims that it covered up the involvement of her fellow officers in sex crimes and prostitution rackets in the Balkans.

Kathryn Bolkovac, an American policewoman, was hired by DynCorp Aerospace in Aldershot for a UN post aimed at cracking down on sexual abuse and forced prostitution in Bosnia.

She claims she was ‘appalled’ to find that many of her fellow officers were involved. She was fired by the British company after amassing evidence that UN police were taking part in the trafficking of young women from eastern Europe as sex slaves.

She said: ‘When I started collecting evidence from the victims of sex trafficking it was clear that a number of UN officers were involved from several countries, including quite a few from Britain. I was shocked, appalled and disgusted. They were supposed to be over there to help, but they were committing crimes themselves. When I told the supervisors they didn’t want to know.’

What Would Teddy Think Today?

Depends on which Edward M. Kennedy you’d ask.

Teddy Kennedy of 1978, who stood up to challenge Jimmy Carter no matter the cost, he might have one opinion of Barack Obama’s presidency.

I remember that Kennedy, while I stood in gas lines in New York City and watched how helpless America looked during the Iranian hostage crisis.

Today we can’t even talk about something as bold as a primary challenge to Pres. Obama, no matter that he’s earned it. The money juggernaut of Obama reelect is one reason, but with even progressives proclaiming no one can challenge Obama because he’s the first African American president, as Markos Moulitsas did with Keith Olbermann recently, it puts Barack Obama in a very special class of his own; one that elevates the politician over policy prescriptions that shore up our country’s overall health.

The Tea Party crazies wouldn’t be interested in this type of political etiquette, if you will. They want to win the argument through legislation, while managing to change the entire economic debate by taking on the GOP establishment and forcing an outcome the insiders couldn’t have come close to getting on their own. Tea Party outsider muscle helped Republicans beat Pres. Obama and his entire economic and political teams combined.

The Kennedy who endorsed Barack Obama in the star studded media extravaganza, covered by cable with full fanfare that would have been embarrassing to Edward R. Murrow, what would he think today of Obama’s presidency?

Sen. Kennedy proudly passed the torch, but Obama’s presidency as it stands today, well, it’s hard to imagine this is what Teddy had in mind.

Things aren’t getting better because the administration doesn’t even recognize that they are – that their boss is – the problem.John Aravosis

Pelosi: Give me a ‘Satan Sandwich’ with ‘Satan Fries on the Side’

BREAKING… HOUSE PASSES ‘SATAN SANDWICH’

It was 1978 and Jimmy Carter was on his way down, down, down, and Donna Summers, disco and Reaganomics was on the way in and up. So, if in the 21st century we’re going to revisit Republican economics of the ’80s, we might as will bring back disco too.

Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made her announcement in her own inimitable way.

From former Sen. Russ Feingold, founder of Progressives United:

“The debt ceiling deal should remove any doubt of the power corporate interests have over our government. That deal, hammered out by the president and Republican Congressional leaders, places the burden of reducing our long-term budget problems on average Americans, while the wealthiest individuals and corporations are given a free pass. Americans are willing to bear their share of the burden of addressing our nation’s long-term budget problems, but those sacrifices should be shared by all.”

Next…

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from the Debt Deal
Reaction from Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare Executive VP/Acting CEO

“America’s seniors have been terrified by threats that their life-sustaining Social Security checks wouldn’t be delivered this month if the federal government were to default. So there is some good news in this debt deal if it passes; default will not deny millions of American seniors the benefits they’ve earned. However, that’s small consolation because it never should have come to this in the first place.

For too long, middle-class Americans and their families have been held hostage while anti-tax crusaders threaten American default unless vital programs, like Social Security and Medicare, are slashed. Unfortunately under this debt deal, those programs will still be under attack – this time by a newly-created ‘Super Committee’ of just 12 members of Congress tasked to cut programs by $1.5 trillion dollars. This committee plan will be fast-tracked to force it through Congress with no amendments allowed and little time for debate.

Americans of all ages and political persuasions know that Social Security and Medicare have not caused this economic crisis and do not support cutting these programs to pay down the debt. Yet, Washington continues to use these vital programs, and the Americans they serve, as bargaining chips in a quest to balance the budget on the backs of working class Americans and their families.

Our work is clearly cut out for us. The House Speaker has said he will appoint only “Super Committee” members opposed to revenue increases. Leaving the debate right where we started…100% benefit cuts and 0% revenue…except this time, the proposal will bypass the normal Congressional process. That makes it even easier to force middle-class benefit cuts to pay for billionaire tax breaks and corporate loopholes. This is no way to run a country. And the over 3 million members and supporters of the National Committee will continue to deliver that message loud and clear, focusing our efforts on this Super Committee as well as the rest of Congress and the White House.”

From the CBO:

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated the impact on the deficit of the Budget Control Act of 2011, as posted on the Web site of the House Committee on Rules on August 1, 2011. The legislation would:

  • Establish caps on discretionary spending through 2021;
  • Allow for certain amounts of additional spending for “program integrity” initiatives aimed at reducing the amount of improper benefit payments;
  • Make changes to the Pell Grant and student loan programs;
  • Require that the House of Representatives and the Senate vote on a joint resolution proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution;
  • Establish a procedure to increase the debt limit by $400 billion initially and procedures that would allow the limit to be raised further in two additional steps, for a cumulative increase of between $2.1 trillion and $2.4 trillion;
  • Reinstate and modify certain budget process rules;
  • Create a Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction to propose further deficit reduction, with a stated goal of achieving at least $1.5 trillion in budgetary savings over 10 years; and
  • Establish automatic procedures for reducing spending by as much as $1.2 trillion if legislation originating with the new joint select committee does not achieve such savings.

Are you feelin’ it yet? Let’s dance, baby.

Tea Party Politics is Crazy, But They Won

“The “hobbits” won.”Mark Thiessen

This is what happens when the man in the White House doesn’t have the leadership character for the job.

As for all those analysts, including a lot of progressives and new media sites, who tried to stuff the Tea Party in the racist bin thinking that would be enough, you have been humiliated by the small government crew that was at the foundation of what became an astroturf movement the media glommed on to, while Democrats actually believed they weren’t for real.

Corporate wingnut titans can funnel money into a movement, but if they don’t have front men and women with principle who’ll go down for the cause it hardly matters. Yes, there are racists in the Tea Party, no doubt about it, but by overplaying the theme while amateurs railed against Washington, Democrats and progressives missed the movement’s power by a mile. The carnage left today is the result.

It all began with Sarah Palin, which progressives and new media sites ignored or vilified. Her power has risen and she’s finally fallen, but through health care and the 2010 election, no person was more powerful or impacted the Tea Party presence more than Sarah, allowing them to take center stage in Washington and accomplish the defeat of progressive economics, because their opponent, Pres. Obama, wasn’t up to the job.

Having a pretty spokes model has worked before and the Democrats were no more prepared for Palin and the Tea Party than they were for Ronald Reagan. Democrats and progressives should just count their lucky stars that Palin is gone and Michele Bachmann’s lack of maleness makes her an untenable choice for the GOP boys’ club who seem to be hoping the televangelist huckster Rick Perry can do it for them, as Mitt Romney faces a whole new set of very real challenges to his candidacy. Pres. Obama may be the Democratic poison political pill, but he’d beat Perry in a walk.

With Fox News Channel behind the Tea Party, just like they did during the Bush era, Republicans and the mighty Right, however wrong their policies, have pummeled the Democratic party and progressives into submission, at least for the moment, through the rise of Obamanomics.

So, it’s time to give credit where it’s due and it’s not to political analysts like Lawrence O’Donnell who not only blew the McConnell call, but also his analysis on Obama, while huffing and puffing for 20 minutes every night in his opener and saying absolutely nothing worth remembering today.

Obamanomics is here and the country is stuck with it; an orphaned idea hollowly culled from Republicanism that ignores jobs and growth for cuts, cuts, cuts, while discounting that it’s the middle class and “working stiffs” who fuel demand that inspires corporations to create jobs in the first place.

The Tea Party played Pres. Obama and the Democratic party for the craven, purposeless, unmotivated political class they are; a group of individuals who stand for nothing but promoting celebrity over philosophical muscle that may not be perfect, but has at its heart the welfare of the people above all.

While the details of the debt ceiling deal remain fuzzy, this much is clear: Barack Obama may be president, but the Tea Party is now running Washington.Peter Beinert

Republicans Fake Pres. Obama Out of his Shorts

For the deal itself, given the available information, is a disaster, and not just for President Obama and his party. [...] Make no mistake about it, what we’re witnessing here is a catastrophe on multiple levels. It is, of course, a political catastrophe for Democrats, who just a few weeks ago seemed to have Republicans on the run over their plan to dismantle Medicare; now Mr. Obama has thrown all that away. And the damage isn’t over: there will be more choke points where Republicans can threaten to create a crisis unless the president surrenders, and they can now act with the confident expectation that he will. – The President Surrenders, by Paul Krugman

Waking up naked on Monday morning in front of the world is embarrassing. It’s even worse when people looking at you are laughing.

It left Obama loyalists in disarray, grasping for a way to handle the onslaught of outrage. TPM had an interesting way to go at it, providing headlines with question marks, emails from outraged readers, while Obama fell off a pedestal he’d never earned in the first place.

But regurgitating puma-esque headlines? It was not just sad, but disgraceful.

Buyer’s remorse?

Pres. Obama is our president and no matter your political party we all needed him to stand up to the Tea Party extortionists, who in the end proved the only principled people, however crazy their politics, in this mess. That they provided Mitch McConnell with the weapons he needed should go without saying at this point. That they unmasked progressives in Congress as not having half their courage does as well.

What was needed from the President’s loyalists was someone to do political analysis that pointed the blame where it belongs: Pres. Barack Obama, who not only surrendered, but set up a situation where we all get to revisit his cowardice until 2012, while Republicans now know beyond a reason of a doubt he hasn’t the character for his job.

Hillary Clinton is not only irrelevant in this discussion, she doesn’t deserve to be mentioned, because she’s so far out of Obama’s disastrous political “surrender,” to use Krugman’s words, that it’s unfair to drag her back in. Unfortunately, at the height of Pres. Obama’s collapse, some loyalists had nothing else to offer but Clinton redux.

Sen. Mitch McConnell used Barack Obama like a cat plays with an insect. Not quite wiping him out with the first swipe, just when you think it’s safe, your adversary closes in for the final assault. The only thing Obama had left at the end of the weekend was the whine and last gasp of a presidency that will continue, but doesn’t mean anything anymore, because he’s left the United States economically crippled for the foreseeable future.

The New York Times editorial page eviscerated the deal:

There is little to like about the tentative agreement between Congressional leaders and the White House except that it happened at all. The deal would avert a catastrophic government default, immediately and probably through the end of 2012. The rest of it is a nearly complete capitulation to the hostage-taking demands of Republican extremists. It will hurt programs for the middle class and poor, and hinder an economic recovery.

Politics isn’t Hollywood, but until people quit playing it as a reality show or a casting call, picking their favorite celebrity and thinking personality is the answer, relying on celebrity talk show hosts who pronounce politicians as “The One,” we’ll get bad endings and short stories about people who leave carnage in their wake, without ever caring what happens when they’re gone.

Fun with Sarah

As John Boehner counts votes and has one-on-one meetings, Sarah issues a veiled threat to the House Tea Party Caucus from the outskirts of Facebook.

P.S. Everyone I talk to still believes in contested primaries.

Of course they do, because the people Sarah talks to don’t have to actually govern the country and be held accountable for what happens with the decisions they make.

On a day when presidential candidate Michele Bachmann delivers her crazy at the Press Club, Sarah is relegated to talking about the “little people” way “out here in proverbial politico flyover country.”

Irrelevancy never looked so obvious.

Women Seeking Legal Abortion Forced Into Do-It-Yourself Situations

Abortions are still legal in America, but you wouldn’t know it today.

Women requiring an abortion are now forced, because of lack of access to doctors, to utilize telemedicine to effectively terminate a pregnancy, which is a legal procedure according to U.S. law. This has come about because of right-wing zealots and religious quacks, who are not only still a danger to our country, but specifically to women’s freedoms, partly because politicians have stopped standing up for hard fought rights we’ve won in the courts, allowing wingnuts to break the law and force women into an impossible situation.

The good news is that abortificients are effective and studies have shown they are also physically safe. The other positive sign is that telemedicine seems to work, which when you’re up against matters.

Using an abortificient like mifepristone, it’s what emergency reproductive health care for women looks like in rural Iowa and some other states, with Arizona, Kansas, North Dakota, Nebraska and Tennessee already jumping in to impede women’s freedom to control their own life.

The report comes from ABC News:

… As states increasingly enact laws that restrict women’s access to legal abortion and a dwindling number of doctors choose to perform them, women who live in rural states like Iowa have found it more difficult to terminate their pregnancies. But now, women who might otherwise travel hundreds of miles to see a physician have another option: telemedicine.

A woman seeking an abortion via telemedicine has an ultrasound performed by a trained technician, receives information about medical abortion and signs a standard informed consent for the abortion.

Once that is complete, a physician steps in via teleconference. The doctor reviews the woman’s medical history and ultrasound images, and once it is determined that she is eligible — up to nine weeks pregnant and not an ectopic pregnancy — she has time to ask questions.

Then, the doctor enters a computer passcode to remotely open a drawer at the clinic containing two pills. She then swallows the mifepristone, under the doctor’s supervision, and then is instructed to take four additional tablets of misoprostol within the next 24 to 48 hours. The actual abortion happens at home. [...]

There’s really not a lot to add on this one that I haven’t written before, except to emphasize the opening paragraph:

As states increasingly enact laws that restrict women’s access to legal abortion

and a dwindling number of doctors choose to perform them, women who live in rural states like Iowa have found it more difficult to terminate their pregnancies. But now, women who might otherwise travel hundreds of miles to see a physician have another option: telemedicine.

What’s come to America that denies women a legal procedure due to the zealotry of a determined group to impede women’s freedoms, without the Democratic president and every single member of Congress on the Left standing up to demand women’s court-won rights be honored upheld?

Tea Party Austerity Cheerleader Joe Walsh Accused of Being Deadbeat Dad

**UPDATED**

“This is where America is.” – Rep. Joe Walsh

Times are tough these days, so it’s not surprising that some divorced fathers are having tough times paying child support. But when you’re an outspoken austerity, cut, cap and balance bloviator, the news of allegations that Joe Walsh is a dead beat dad is at least a bit ironic. From the Sun Times:

Freshman U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, a tax-bashing Tea Party champion who sharply lectures President Barack Obama and other Democrats on fiscal responsibility, owes more than $100,000 in child support to his ex-wife and three children, according to documents his ex-wife filed in their divorce case in December. [...]

Walsh admits he is not wealthy. Some of his financial problems — including losing his Evanston condo to foreclosure — were documented before his out-of-nowhere victory last fall in the 8th Congressional District in Chicago’s north and northwest suburbs.

But court documents examined this week by the Chicago Sun-Times during research for a profile on the increasingly visible congressman showed his financial issues also included a nine-year child support battle with his ex-wife.

Before getting elected, he had told Laura Walsh that because he was out of work or between jobs, he could not make child support payments. [...]

Barney Frank: Gender Bias Against ‘Strong-willed Women’ Stopped Warren

Was it because Elizabeth Warren is a woman, which could have been part of it? Or is it because Pres. Obama simply wouldn’t fight for her, because he certainly did not?

From ABC News:

Frank did not say who he blames for gender bias – the White House for not nominating her or Republicans in the Senate for promising to block her nomination.

“Ms. Warren encountered from some people, maybe unconscious on their part, the notion that very strong-willed women with strong opinions might have a place but not in the financial sector,” said Frank.

A spokesman for Republicans on the House Financial Services Committee pointed out that Warren could easily have been nominated by the White House over Cordray.

But then again, as far as I can tell Pres. Obama doesn’t fight for anything.

Something tells me Ms. Warren will find a platform, because there are too many people who trust her and want to continue to hear what she has to say.

Pelosi Falls to Austerity Craze, Clyburn – Becerra Cite 14th Amendment

**UPDATED**

“If that’s what lands on his desk, a short-term lifting of the ceiling, the debt ceiling, he should put it on his desk next to an executive order,” Clyburn said at a press conference. “He should sign an executive order invoking the 14th Amendment to this issue.” The Associated Press reported that he was applauded when he suggested the idea at a caucus meeting earlier in the day. “I believe that something like this will bring calm to the American people and will bring needed stability to our financial markets,” Clyburn added, noting that President Harry Truman did it once during his presidency after Congress was unable to pass a bill to raise the debt ceiling. – Obama urged to invoke 14th Amendment as debt ceiling deadline nears

While Republicans are having a civil war that the establishment and Wall Street are trying desperately to negotiate through without becoming a casualty of their Tea Party extortionist wing, Democrats have completely collapsed.

UPDATE: 3:35 p.m.White House Press Secretary Jay Carney again ruled out the possibility of Obama using the 14th Amendment to resolve the debt dispute. “Our position hasn’t changed,” Carney said during his Wednesday briefing. “There are no off-ramps. … Only Congress has the legal authority.”

I still contend the debt ceiling will be raised, though I still hope not with anything more than the language required to raise it like has been utilized throughout history, on which Lawrence O’Donnell has done the bulk of the education.

However, after it’s all over what’s been learned is sobering, especially on the Democratic side of the equation where leaders have bought into Obamanomic Republicanism, jettisoning every principle important to Democrats and the middle class.

Rep. Pelosi has done another cave to Pres. Obama, this time to the President’s austerity fetish. It’s not getting any attention, but it proves she’s no longer the person to lead Democrats in Congress.

“It is clear we must enter an era of austerity; to reduce the deficit through shared sacrifice.

“The President has called for a ‘grand bargain,’ which provides long-term deficit reduction based on shared values and sends a message of confidence to the markets. [...]

The only thing that’s clear is that establishment Democrats can’t be trusted to protect the basic underlying principles of what it means to be a Democrat. I walked away from then Speaker Pelosi when she and Pres. Obama sold out women for the Stupak amendment, plus an executive signing statement, so her latest collapse to Obama’s conservatism comes as no surprise at all to me.

With House progressives losing Nancy Pelosi to Obama’s austerity craze, Democrats are in a principle tailspin.

The only light so far, besides Welch and Grivalja, is the House Democratic caucus’ response today, invoking the 14 Amendment, which you know by now makes my heart sing, even though Pres. Obama will never utilize it. Melissa Harris-Perry did a terrific segment last night while subbing for Rachel Maddow, but evidently it’s too hot for MSNBC videos so they didn’t upload it. You know, can’t be too outsiderish, now can we?

From the transcript of the press availability from the Democratic House leaders today:

Caucus Vice-Chairman Becerra: When the President says he’s not interested in invoking the 14th Amendment, I think the President’s saying I’m not interested in being the first in the history of this country of doing something that has not been tested.

Clearly, the 14th Amendment says that our debts are vowed and therefore we live – we will live and follow through with paying – we will honor them, we will pay them.

There’s going to be some hangover after the debt ceiling debacle ends and what lies ahead looks like the mother of all political migraines for anyone on the Left.

Bachmann’s Big Beauty Budget

It’s the Hillary effect again, this time on what it takes for a female candidate to run for president, including expenses a man doesn’t have to consider.

I’ve been following Michele Bachmann’s makeover, which was unveiled at one point in 2010 when Sarah Palin came to campaign for her in Minnesota. I did a piece on it at the time, because it was a signal Bachmann was gaming up for something.

But the Mother Jones piece by Andy Kroll has already made it to Minneapolis. Here’s one graph of Kroll’s story:

According to Bachmann’s latest campaign finance filings, her campaign spent nearly $4,700 on hair and makeup in the weeks after she entered the presidential race on June 13. Records show her campaign made three payments of $1,715, $250, and $2,704 to a Maryland-based stylist named Tamara Robertson. Robertson’s LinkedIn profile says she works as a makeup artist at Fox News in the DC area. She’s also listed in the “Make-up” section of the credits for the Citizens United-produced film A City Upon a Hill, hosted by Newt and Callista Gingrich—a pair who’ve raised eyebrows with their own spending.

No journalistic outfit should send a man to do a piece on a female candidate’s salon expenses, because they haven’t a flippin’ clue what’s required to maintain an image for the public or the media, let alone all day long.

Remember Hillary? The wrinkle effect blasted by Drudge, then picked up by Rush Limbaugh? Remember Hillary’s fabulous hairstyle during the campaign, the highlights within highlights? She’s never looked better than when she was running for president, but it was a lot of effort, which she quickly dropped once she became Pres. Obama’s secretary of state.

Women have a much higher bar on looks and appearance than men do, including in politics. So, there are a couple of ways to handle the challenge. Proclaim it’s your money and you’ll spend it however you want. Bachmann could also find a more modest stylist, take the pictures of appearances to this person and then ask he or she to replicate them.

Tamara Robertson obviously is incredibly talented and has done a formidable job turning the latest Tea Party star into a sensational knock out. But Bachmann looks fantastic in the video here from 2010 either, when she made Sarah Palin look dowdy. Bachmann now has a beauty road map to follow, which can be done on a budget (I do it all the time), though it will never be cheap.

The days of dowdy Phyllis Schlafly conservatism are over.

Like it or not, Bachmann’s makeover has been important to her image and profile rise. Crazy doesn’t seem so unappealing when a good looking broad is selling it.

Take Rick Perry, who’s nothin’ without his hair.

Elect More Women, Not Wankers

U.S. Rep. David Wu’s behavior grew so erratic in the final weeks before his re-election last November that the Oregon Democrat’s closest political advisers staged two of what some of them termed “interventions” to urge him to seek psychiatric help, WW has learned.

Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon announced Tuesday that he will resign amid the political fallout from an 18-year-old woman’s allegations of an unwanted sexual encounter with him. – Congressman Resigns in Sex Scandal

Consider this your debt ceiling sanity break.

Another Democrat bites the dust, due to stupidity and personal insanity.

Oh, but not to worry, Sen. David Vitters is still safely ensconced in the Senate, where the old boys’ club still reigns.

Norway Domestic Terrorist Reportedly Influenced by Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, U.S. Right-Wing

Oh, the inconvenience of facts when met with ugly reality. Pamela Geller and Jihad Watch’s Robert Spencer are cited in today’s New York Times story:

Anders Behring Breivik

Marc Sageman, a former C.I.A. officer and a consultant on terrorism, said it would be unfair to attribute Mr. Breivik’s violence to the writers who helped shape his world view. But at the same time, he said the counterjihad writers do argue that the fundamentalist Salafi branch of Islam “is the infrastructure from which Al Qaeda emerged. Well, they and their writings are the infrastructure from which Breivik emerged.”

“This rhetoric,” he added, “is not cost-free.”

[...] Mr. Breivik frequently cited another blog, Atlas Shrugs, and recommended the Gates of Vienna among Web sites. Pamela Geller, an outspoken critic of Islam who runs Atlas Shrugs, wrote on her blog Sunday that any assertion that she or other antijihad writers bore any responsibility for Mr. Breivik’s actions was “ridiculous.”

“If anyone incited him to violence, it was Islamic supremacists,” she wrote.

The tragedy of the scores murdered can only be mitigated, however slightly, if we attempt to understand the fueling of people, including lone wolf domestic terrorists, though Breivik may have had accomplices, because it’s never just them in the picture.

All you have to do is take a look at the Republican party’s 2012 roster for examples of who’s fueling this stuff. William Saletan over at Slate did that today. Herman Cain comes to mind, but he’s by no means alone.

And the hypocrisy doesn’t end with Geller. It permeates the Republican presidential field. Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, and Newt Gingrich agree with Geller that no mosque should be built near Ground Zero. Herman Cain, in the style of George Wallace, just went to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to support local bigots who want to stop the construction of a mosque there. Rick Santorum told a Christian school audience: “The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical.” And Michele Bachmann defended a congressional inquiry into Muslim violence by pointing out that recently,

Two of our soldiers were gunned down in Germany, and the fellow who shot them shouted “Allah Akhbar” before he did that. And just the week before that, we had a 20-year-old from Saudi Arabia, here on a student visa in Dallas, who had accumulated all of the chemicals necessary to create a bomb on the order of the Oklahoma City federal building bombing. … If we don’t understand that there are Sharia-compliant terrorists in our midst … we will make ourselves more vulnerable.

Geller responds by calling anyone questioning her Islamaphobia and fearmongering “media assassins” against “voices of freedom.” People like Geller and others of her ilk simply think freedom is not for Muslims or anyone outside their wingnut hysteria club, with the impetus behind much of Geller’s invective style and hate speech her anti-Israeli paranoia, which is all consuming.

Charles Johnson over at Little Green Footballs has no problem writing the obvious:

There’s no doubt whatsoever that Anders Behring Breivik was seriously influenced by these people, and they know it. Their guilty consciences are showing.

But not to worry, there’s always someone willing to make excuses for these inciting wingnuts. Cue David Horowitz, writing under the title of “The Character Assassination of Robert Spencer,” which is as appalling as most of the wingnuttery from this man.

Hate is the driver, a reaction to what some right-wing fanatics see as all around them, which in Europe finds the numbers rising. From the Atlantic:

Over the last decade, the extreme right in Europe has become more palatable. The overt racism and chest-beating nationalism of previous years have been discarded. What characterizes the new far-right is a defiant, aggressive defence of national culture and history in the face of a changing world, of secularism, and even of democracy and liberty. While each has its idiosyncrasies, far-right parties are responding to genuine concerns of many voters: that modern globalization hasn’t benefitted them, that mass immigration — especially from Muslim-majority countries — is threatening local and national identity.

[...] Perhaps most important, these new far-right parties like Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party in the Netherlands or Marine Le Pen’s Front National in France expertly portray mainstream politicians as spineless, soft-boiled, venal, self-serving slaves to political correctness and orthodoxy. Recent events — such as banking bailouts, the Eurozone crisis, and the News International hacking scandal — certainly lend some credibility to the view that politicians are indeed out of touch with ordinary people.

[...] A significant chunk of European voters is clearly impressed. Le Pen is currently third in the polling for the 2012 French presidential election. Wilders’ Freedom Party is also the third-largest in the Netherlands. In Scandinavia, the True Finns, the Danish People’s Party, and the Swedish Democrats all secured their best-ever electoral results over the past 18 months. Germany and Austria’s far-right parties are resurgent, sparking atavistic European fears. Further east, the Jobbik Party is now the third largest political party in Hungary, having doubled its seats during the last election.

Right-wing “populism” is an oxymoron.

But as the Tea Party rose in America as a response to Barack Obama’s presidency, though the foundation was economic and born in the Bush era, the fuel has come from extremists questioning Pres. Obama’s Americanism. These individuals charge some bizarre otherness they feel about Obama, resembling the same paranoid fears of the Norway domestic terrorist, Anders Behring Breivik, a kinship of people who believe their future is being taken from them.

Right-wingers are having their day due to many things, including economic and cultural, but also because of feckless posturing from people who make false equivalencies under the guise of being “balanced.”

When you have someone like Donald Trump joining in on the rhetoric of birtherism it gives you the best example anywhere on earth at just how easy it is for this insidiously dangerous fearmongering to spread if even business tycoons feel comfortable repeating the most dangerous charges.

Poor Glenn Beck, he’s got to be really gnashing his teeth he doesn’t have his Fox megaphone anymore. But at least he was able to spew his “Hitler youth” invective on right-wing radio, so he shouldn’t feel he missed out.

PPP: ‘Obama in Perilous Shape’

President Barack Obama talks with Counsel to the President Kathryn Ruemmler in the Oval Office, July 19, 2011. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

From Public Policy Polling comes evidence that the conventional wisdom among Republicans about Mitt Romney isn’t all that smart:

For the first time since last July Barack Obama does not lead Mitt Romney in PPP’s monthly national poll on the 2012 Presidential race. Romney has now pulled into a tie with the President at 45%.

Obama’s approval rating this month is 46% with 48% of voters disapproving of him. There are 2 things particularly troubling in his numbers: independents split against him by a 44/49 margin, and 16% of Democrats are unhappy with the job he’s doing while only 10% of Republicans give him good marks. Republicans dislike him at this point to a greater extent than Democrats like him and that will be a problem for him moving forward if it persists.

Here’s an important note on all of this early 2012 polling though: Obama’s numbers are worse than they appear to be on the surface. The vast majority of the undecideds in all of these match ups disapprove of the job Obama’s doing but aren’t committing to a candidate yet while they wait to see how the Republican field shakes out. Here’s an idea of where these various match ups might stand once all voters have made up their minds: …

But the paragraph from PPP on Obama versus Bachmann will blow your mind.

Allen West, Poster Child for the Republican War on Women

The above graphic is the headline on Emily’s List fundraising email (just click on it to support Wasserman-Schultz), as they capitalize off of the battle that’s ensued over DNC chairman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz taking it to Allen West.

“The gentleman from Florida. who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries, unbelievable from a Member from South Florida,” Wasserman Schultz said, saying the legislation “slashes Medicaid and critical investments essential to winning the future in favor of protecting tax breaks for Big Oil, millionaires, and companies who ship American jobs overseas.” – Allen West tirade: Wasserman Schultz ‘vile…despicable…not a Lady’

Wasserman-Schultz hit a nerve, a whole bundle of them. It started long before this brouhaha, with Republicans putting her in their sights from the start. Many of you’ll remember this hit video, which came with an aggressive campaign to paint the DNC chairman as, well, you know.

… Wasserman Schultz is kind of an easy target. Any “aggressive messenger” is. Extreme and shrill is always far easier to spoof than subtle and nuanced. – Hot Air

To Republicans, any strong female is considered shrill, extreme and aggressive. Unless, of course, she’s speaking their tune, like Ann Coulter; except when she gets to the top of the presidential wannabe heap, which makes the GOP boys’ club incredibly nervous.

Meanwhile, Emily’s list is making money off of his unhinged, ungentlemanly, unprovoked rant.

On Twitter, the hash tag being used is #actlikealady, which could be used in so many, many ways, if for no other reason than to have fun at West’s expense.

Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional ,and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. Focus on your own congressional district!

I am bringing your actions today to our Majority Leader and Majority Whip and from this time forward, understand that I shall defend myself forthright against your heinous characterless behavior……which dates back to the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign hqs, October 2010 in Deerfield Beach.

You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!

Steadfast and Loyal

Congressman Allen B West (R-FL)

All this makes me ask, what exactly would it take for a female to be considered a lady by Mr. West. Silent, subservient and Schlafly-esque is the ticket, I have very little doubt.

HIT PIECE: Michele Bachmann’s ‘Stress-Induced’ Headaches ‘Incapacitate’

Aw, come on, boys. If John F. Kennedy can do it on all the drugs he chugged, so can Michele Bachmann.

The Daily Caller headline is the tell:

Stress-related condition ‘incapacitates’ Bachmann; heavy pill use alleged.

It cannot possibly be a coincidence that with Rep. Michele Bachmann surging we now are privy to a potentially devastating report about the presidential candidate allegedly popping pills to alleviate pain.

Women have worked for over one hundred years to be taken seriously and considered as strong candidates for commander in chief. One has to wonder if this was leaked to make voters question her health, but also her strength. Headaches are not considered by most to be something serious, maybe even a frivolous complaint by someone with a weak constitution.

With such incredible details, it seems obvious Mrs. Bachmann has a very serious problem:

The Minnesota Republican frequently suffers from stress-induced medical episodes that she has characterized as severe headaches. These episodes, say witnesses, occur once a week on average and can “incapacitate” her for days at time. On at least three occasions, Bachmann has landed in the hospital as a result.
Ads by Google

“She has terrible migraine headaches. And they put her out of commission for a day or more at a time. They come out of nowhere, and they’re unpredictable,” says an adviser to Bachmann who was involved in her 2010 congressional campaign. “They level her. They put her down. It’s actually sad. It’s very painful.”

As someone who has worked tirelessly to cure myself of migraines, I find this report alarming.

There is something horribly wrong with a professional person who isn’t dealing with deeper issues that trigger a migraine. As the Daily Caller reports, she’s been hospitalized and had to recuperate at home, away from her job, because of them, after having been incapacitated by them. Being treated with medication is dealing with the symptoms and staving off the results of something in your life that precipitates the event.

You cannot get rid of any health issue without finding the root of the cause of your problem, whether it’s diet, lifestyle, maybe a spouse or even your job.

Now, I don’t pretend to know any specifics about Mrs. Bachmann’s debilitating pain issues, but as someone who once had to live with migraines from the time I was a kid, had to perform while throwing up off stage between numbers because of them, as well as having my long ago past riddled with 24-hour vomiting over 3 days before they broke, I sure as hell know the answer isn’t medication, which offers no definitive solution. Thankfully, I cured myself. Solving the riddle of pain means discovering what in your life is causing the stress that leads your brain to the pain seizures of migraines.

But if you don’t, can’t or won’t, pills it is. At least today there are new drugs that make the days of injections a memory.

Of particular concern to some around her is the significant amount of medication Bachmann takes to address her condition.

The former aide says Bachmann’s congressional staff is “constantly” in contact with her doctors to tweak the types and amounts of medicine she is taking. Marcus Bachmann helps her manage the episodes.

Sources who spoke to The Daily Caller said they did so because they are terrified about the impact the condition could have on Bachmann’s performance if she actually became president. They also worry that the issue could blow up in the general election campaign, giving President Obama an easy path to re-election.

The drugs that kept Pres. John F. Kennedy alive went well beyond migraine medications, as historian Robert Dalek wrote in “An Unfinished Life,” which was just one of the hundreds of sources I relied on for my one woman show on J.F.K.  If he had run for office today, let alone been president, there is no way he could have kept his double digit list of medications a secret. He had his women, his doctors and all the drugs that kept him alive:

  • Anesthetic procaine, for his Addison’s disease
  • Cytomel, for thyroid deficiency
  • Lomitil
  • Metamucil, now there’s a commercial for you
  • Paregoric
  • Phenobarbitol
  • Trasentine, to control his colitic diarrhea
  • Testosterone, to increase his energy and boost his weight after bouts of colitis
  • Penicillin, for urinary tract flare ups
  • Fluorinef, to increase his salt absorption due to Addison’s
  • Cortisone
  • Tuinal, for insomnia – a side effect of the cortisone
  • Antihistamines, for an array of allergies
  • Codeine
  • Steroids… Oh, and Vitamin C and calcium.

J.F.K. also had lots of doctors who gave him his “vigah,” including injections. They also led to rumors that Nixon tried to steal his medical records. He had an allergist; an endocrinologist for his Addison’s disease; a gastroenterologist for his colitis; a urologist, because he’d gotten a urinary tract infection from venereal disease; an orthopedist for his degenerative spine, but no one knew.

What this report is meant to conjure up is Rep. Bachmann’s physical frailty. It’s a political attack by “former aides” trying to take the bitch out.

There’s a reason Tim Pawlenty had a former aide of Bachmann do an op-ed hit piece in Iowa. A reason Rick Perry is being pimped by the conservative boys’ club. It’s not that he’s got anything Michele Bachmann hasn’t. He’s chock full of crazy, too. But at least he’s not a f*#!ing girl.
