‘TM-DC’ Podcast

PODCAST
Sanford’s Argentinian love affair and a little frank talk about relationships.

Photobucket

“Dr. Taylor” is in. Relationships are the topic, with a lot of fodder to mine (having a little fun, too). That’s because Gov. Sanford, as tragic as he looked when he got caught, was quite breezy about taking chances.

Just how reckless was Mark Sanford? Read Ben Smith:

Sanford booked the trip on Delta Air Lines on June 10, using the company’s SkyMiles program, the source said. He bought a ticket for June 18, returning June 28.

After or close to the time his wife kicked him out, Sanford planned a ten-day trip to Buenos Aires to see his mistress Maria Belen Chapur. A man cut loose by his wife who plans an extended disappearing act in another country to cavort with his mistress is not exactly a man with whom you bet a second chance.

Lots about Iran, of course, but there’s also some fun mixed with the serious stuff. Couldn’t resist uploading Paul Begala v. Meghan McCain, which happened on Bill Maher’s “Real Time.” The girl was fine when she kept it light and just spoke through her heart and from the hip. Now she’s showing up with an up-do, taking herself way too seriously. When she thinks she can trade one liners with a master like Paul, well, step away from the microphone.

6.23.09: From Meghan v. Begala, to Hillary,
to Iran, the Press and Obama… bye Ed.

Also discuss this article about Secretary Clinton, which isn’t bad. A couple of keepers, including this one: Successful secretaries like James Baker brought in political inner circles. That’s a nice segue to the fact that Sidney Blumenthal is joining Clinton at State, which The Cable broke earlier today. More from Smith’s article:

“In the eight administrations Secretary Gates has worked in, more often than not the secretary of defense and secretary of state were not on speaking terms. By contrast, he and Secretary Clinton get along as if they were old friends,” he said, adding that Gates sees Clinton as someone who is “serious, hard-working and cares deeply about national security issues.”

… During transition, officials confirmed, she and Gates successfully made the case for an Afghan troop surge, over Vice President Joe Biden’s objections. A State Department source confirmed a report that Clinton had advocated a line on Iran that was firmer than Obama’s early, cautious stance. A White House official said, by contrast, that Clinton’s personal staff had assured the White House there was no daylight between the two sides.

Enjoy the broadcast.

…and speaking of Iran, Joe Klein lets McCain have it. It’s a good one.

To put it as simply as possible, McCain–and his cohorts–are trying to score political points against the President in the midst of an international crisis. It is the sort of behavior that Republicans routinely call “unpatriotic” when Democrats are doing it. I would never question John McCain’s patriotism, no matter how misguided his sense of the country’s best interests sometimes seems. His behavior has nothing to do with love of country; it has everything to do with love of self.

PODCAST: Iranian ‘Cyber Revolution’… with Blackout at State Dept. Blog

–updated below–

“TM-DC” Podcast of Iranian “Cyber Revolution”
… and State Dept. Blog Epic Fail… and more

Day five and still no post from the State Department’s “official” blog, DipNote. Seriously, why have a blog if you’re going to institute a blackout on the biggest international story that happens to be playing out in cyberspace. EPIC. FAIL.

On Twitter, I have been engaged in a couple of back and forth tweets, one with someone associated with State’s Twitter travel feed, who took issue with my critical post. Tough. If you read the post it is accurate in every detail.

In fact, the State Dept. blog hadn’t mentioned Iran at all, not even on Twitter, until someone @dipnote made a reply to YearoftheBlogger who had RT’d (re-tweeted) my post from yesterday. This is DipNote’s response, which automatically was uploaded in the right hand margin Twitter section of the blog. However, no post on Iran followed.

Ready for some irony?

The following was written June 14th as the Iranian “cyber revolution” was unfolding, while State Dept.’s blog was evidently under a gag rule: Hillary Clinton Turns State Department Tech-Friendly.

Meet Hillary Clinton 2.0—the tech-friendly, Web-savvy version of the former candidate and New York senator who’s pushing what insiders call 21st-century statecraft: enhancing diplomacy through technology.

“She pushes us to think big and to take big chances and to try new approaches,” says Alec Ross, an Obama techie Clinton tapped to be senior adviser for innovation at State. “She’s sort of the godmother of all of this,” he adds of Clinton, who’s used her personal BlackBerry since 2006, though not inside the security-sensitive walls of State. The secretary of state especially likes using cellular phones to connect people around the globe. “Particularly in the developing world, people are increasingly getting their information through mobile phones,” explains Ross. “So we at the State Department are thinking about how that can be a distribution channel for good information.”

Who said irony is dead?

Then late yesterday I received a “direct message” via Twitter from someone @dipnote. Now, they could have used @taylormarsh, but they didn’t. That would have been public and linkable. Sending it “direct,” meant I’d have to cut and paste it to share it, without a link. So, here you go:

Thanks for your Tweets Taylor. We hear you and recognize your concerns.

Excuse me? What sort of rubbish is that to send to me? Idiots.

But since Secretary Clinton answers to President Obama, I’d like to know what the hell the Administration is thinking. You don’t have to appear like you’re “meddling” to simply state the U.S. position on the State Department’s “official” blog. Instead, the official policy of the Obama State Department under Clinton is to IGNORE THE IRANIAN ELECTION, THE DRAMA UNFOLDING and that the United States stands with all people trying to manifest free elections, even as we respect Iran’s sovereignty. Is this so hard? For the Obama-Clinton team, yes, it is. Or, rather, on Iran, NO THEY CAN’T.

So State obviously didn’t “hear” me and have not “recognized” squat.

Five days and counting and we’ve still got blogging silence from State.

UPDATE (9:55 p.m. eastern) What’s this? The State Dept.’s Twitter feed is now using the “I” word. See here and here, posting tweets after this post appeared. But it’s important to note, Twitter feeds disappear. If we could only get State’s “official” blog to actually use the “I” word in a post, the actual voice of any “official” blog. If we could get someone over at State’s blog DipNote to actually post something about Iran IN THE BLOG ITSELF we might actually have a baby blog in bloom. Seriously, who’s editing this crap? Pitiful. They’re linking to statements via Twitter, while their “official” blog remains muzzled? Sheesh, absolutely clueless.

‘TM-DC’ Podcast

–updated below–

This week’s podcast is ready, also available on ITunes, as well as RSS feed. Subjects include… Week Ending 6-6-09: D-Day at 65; Dr. Tiller’s Murder; Obama in Cairo, with Clinton; the Liz Cheney Media Blitz; McChrystal and 1,000 new Special Ops for Afghanistan.

Pres. Obama in his weekly radio address stressed the importance of getting health care reform passed. Something that is important and on many minds around here.

The week culminated today in D-Day ceremonies that were unbelievably moving, made more so because Pres. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama make us all so proud. I seem to never make it through a playing of “Taps” without having to hold back tears. Coupled with the story Pres. Obama told about the one D-Day veteran who made it to see the beaches where he landed one last time, and then when he went to bed that night died in his sleep. Seeing combined Air Forces of our countries flie overhead, one peeling off, it just hits home so deeply. I’d like to just mention someone, my brother-in-law’s father, Mr. B.D. Simon, who is still alive and living in Missouri, who was one of those men who made a difference and is now in his 90s, sending a silent meditation to Uncle Dick, too. Hoo-rah goes out to my big bro as well, who, if JFK hadn’t prevailed, might have ended up landing in Cuba.

It’s been quite a week. …and don’t forget Secretary Clinton will be on “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos tomorrow, her first interview since joining President Obama’s Cabinet.

TM NOTE: This post has been re-posted after a tech snafu.

World News Blast, and Podcast

New podcast is up. Features include: Hot Topics (Susan Boyle, McAuliffe); Hunting Sotmayor; Petreaus on Gitmo – Torture; Israel, Obama, Saudis, Egypt.

In other news today, Newt keeps pushing, now calling Judge Sotomayor “un-American” in an email blast. Michael Scherer at Time has the whole email. Not even reading it is believing.

You read that right — Judge Sotomayor said that her experience as a person of a particular sex and ethnic background will make her a better judge than a person of another sex and a different ethnic background!

When did that view become acceptable?

If Civil War, suffrage, and Civil Rights are to mean anything, we cannot accept that conclusion. It is simply un-American. There is no room on the bench of the United States Supreme Court for this worldview.

Moving on to Pakistan. Your must read comes from Ahmed Rashid, who is always in that category.

The Pakistani army is reportedly in “complete control” of Mingora, the Swat Valley’s main commercial area.

LWJ covers a fight with Afghan Army and Coalition Forces fighting the Taliban.

In the in case you missed it file, what would we ever do without a super embassy in Pakistan?

Segue to the Saudi royal family, where the Justice department is supporting the claim that they cannot be sued via a 9/11 lawsuit.

In a barbaric act of despicable force, the Saudis behead and crucified a convicted man who reportedly molested a man’s son, then murdered him.

To cleanse the Sunday palate of that disgusting item, Pres. Obama took the First Lady to a Broadway show, a place that’s been very hard hit by the recession. Mrs. Obama’s dress was drop dead gorgeous. As a serious supporter of all things Broadway, I applaud the date night choice.

A post on the Kilcullen Doctrine (h/t Small Wars Journal).

And it seems Netanyahu is pining over the Bush-Cheney days, wishing for their return. Israel is “disappointed” that Obama is not playing fairy godfather to their fondest wishes.

TM-DC, Testing

The video contains just one of the subjects I cover in the first TEST installment of TM-DC, my first podcasts since landing in Washington, D.C. Call it a dress rehearsal, but what the hell. Thought I’d share them anyway.

New equipment set up that I’m just getting used to, quick trigger buttons, but it’s fun to get back at it.

One thing my radio show was not, and TM-DC won’t be either, is a replication of the blog content. Radio is a whole different type of entertainment, as are the podcasts of TM-DC, so don’t expect what you get from my written articles here or over at Huffington Post.

Also, like before, interviews with foreign policy experts to come, so stay tuned.

The podcasts are in 9 min. segments, totaling around an hour, for the time being, but they’ll soon switch to one-hour downloads like before. The clicking on links to get the download is awkward, but we’ll get that fixed too. Still testing equipment, but audio levels in particular.

Enjoy the first installments while I work out some more of the kinks. We’ll get there.
